speeding ticket from Canada

While we were there in Alberta, apparently I got a speeding ticket with my Enterprise rental car. Enterprise in Ontario sends me a letter saying they are paying the ticket for me immediately to avoid additional penalties and that I owe them $130. They didn't attach any pics/proof that I was speeding, or by how much or any other details other than location and that it was that vehicle (license plate) on a day I had it.

Now if this was direct from law enforcement Canada, people have decided not to pay - can anything really happen to me or my license?

Since this is from Enterprise Holdings' Citations Dept in Ontario, and I owe them (without any proof of the offense, mind you, or my pleading guilty) what would happen if I decide not to pay anything? Can they go after my credit just the same?

Sorry I don't know. But if I were you, besides the fact that I would probably pay, I would wonder if this would go on my record and if so how do I dispute it or taking driving school to keep it off if Enterprise just paid the ticket without dispute.

If you plan on going back to Canada pay up. Not worth the hassles if they somehow get a warrant out for you.

If not, ignore it. Canadian companies have no way to get into your credit, even if they have even your SS number.

I would try to get the company to email or mail me a copy of the ticket, but if they did and it was valid, I'd pay it.

Yes, because a foreign company can't send your ass to a collection agency.

Seriously? Do you people not even THINK before you speak?

Ask them for a copy of the ticket. Tell them if they are unwilling to provide actual proof of the infraction, you are unwilling to acknowledge that it isn't a fraudulent attempt at extorting more money and refuse to pay until they provide said proof.

Rental companies will usually just charge tickets and toll fees on your CC, which is why they take the hold. Yes, it's done through a head office. Still, they should be able to show you the bill. Phone their head office and ask them to send you a copy before you pay up.

Last time I got a ticket in Alberta, that's exactly the way it worked. I am surprised they did not charge his credit card.
I did get a copy of the ticket along with a picture of the rented car on the road.

The letter also stated they were unable to charge it, not sure why it didn't go through, as the regular rental fee went through fine and the card is still active. Regardless, they shouldn't be making people plea guilty automatically. My cousin, whom I was following on every road there BTW (I am waiting to hear if she got a ticket too), has fought many tickets there.

the smart thing to do is get proof of the ticket and pay it. Its not worth fighting unless you live in Alberta.

Besides, when you go back to Alberta they might go after you about it.

Does the rental agreement say anything about photo tickets?

unless they stated that they will add fees if you pay late, just ask them the proof and wait.
If they give it to you, just pay and next time be more careful.
If not, tell them that you consider it a fraudolent attempt at extortion and see what happens. If they give up, good, if they don't, and go to a collection agency or something, just pay. 130$ isn't worth risking trouble.

You could ignore it and be one of those Americans that come into Canada, speed, and never pay the ticket (couple hundred million dollar backlog right now?)... Those bastards at the rental company already paid though, so you not the cools anymore:(.

Oh please... I was going 90mph (not km/h) in my little Toyota Matrix trying to keep up with my Canadian cousin doing 100mph on our way to Edmonton and back. Guess what... people were even faster than us. Slow traffic keep right - slow as in only 80mph.

It looks like this ticket was about a block north of the Edmonton mall. I guess I was speeding on a local road right after I made a left turn out of our hotel (ticket says NB assuming northbound). WTF... how fast could I have possibly been going right after a turn in a car that has zero torque and could barely make it up hills?

I'll just pay it if they produce evidence.

Any charges incurred, so it would apply. Aren't photo tickets valid there?

Hey man, you're talking to someone who goes 30 over a regular basis, so don't bother explaining:).

100mph? That's 160.9km/h! You are lucky you did not get hit with a speeding ticket. Well, it would not be a ticket, it would be a suspension of license, possibly jail time. As fun as it can be to screw around like that, is it really worth risking the loss of your license?

160kph is not 'screwing around'. It is normal passing speed on freeways in the GTA.

The really slow people are going 120, faster are 140 and the people passing are going 160.

What's the speed limit set at? The highest limit I've ever seen is 100 and it was on a huge divided highway with like 4 lanes on each side. Only really see those down south. The typical limits here are 50, the highway is 60 for a section, and there's one small stretch of in-town (well sorta at the edge) highway that is 80. Anything above 40 over IIRC is considered "street racing" and you get your license suspended. Most people tend to do 10 over though and cops seem to let that slide by. I've fallen in the habit of doing it myself. As much as I'd like to try going insane fast there is no legal place to do it, and really, no safe place with a straight enough road to do it, either. Hit a patch of ice at that speed and you are done for.

^ I go the flow of traffic in all situations. I don't even look at the limits most times because it's not necessary driving with everyone else. Honestly where I got caught on a local road they are just being tight-asses and I must not have been the only one, not even close. My cousin didn't get a ticket because that day and time I was driving her back in my car after we dropped hers off to get her windshield fixed. Literally the only time in 10 days I was not following her. Go figure.
