speeding ticket advice.

why are police speed readings always higher than your speedometer says? i know your speedometer can become uncalibrated but does it always read lower than your actual speed? i think policemen just make up numbers. it happened to me, even though my car is not very old, and i was p.o.'ed.

Realize that the speed limit isn't always the "speed limit". Its the limit under GOOD and favorable conditions. If it was raining, the posted speed limit is actually "lower". The cop did the right thing, and you should have slowed down.

EDIT: Also, if your tires are an incorrect size, it could throw off your speedometer by a little bit.

I don't know if they have those "speedometer calibration" signs along the freeways in the east (5 miles, measured so you can set your cruise, time it, and see how accurate your speedo is), but every car I've owned reads 2-3mph HIGHER than you're actually going. So the cops probably make it up to catch people who "weren't really paying attention", that's my guess.

You can go to court and hope you can talk the judge into excusing it, but you really have no argument and you will have to pay court fees that can (depending on where it's for) go up to a $100... so if you lose the case you just paid double the ticket, really.

It's a ~$100 lesson that is over once they get the money. Pay it and forget about it. 🙂

re-reading you post, I can tell you what he probably mumbled:
Your 3 options:
Go to court, plead however you like, hope for good outcome.
Pay the ticket by mail.
Ignore it and have a warrant made for your arrest.

About your best strategy:
He seemed like a cool guy. If you would have given him a reason you were speeding and be honest with him he might have let you off. Not saying you lied to him or anything, but there's really no reason to NOT try and tell an officer why you were speeding. It's not like they can give you extra tickets if your excuse sucks or something. Oh well. 🙁
