Speeding in school zones

I drive by a school on my way to work every day. One thing I have noticed is that most people don't go the posted 15 MPH through the school zone. They usually seem to go about 30 or so, and some seem to fly through it. Even some of the school vehicles drive faster than the limit.

Does this seem to be common everywhere or just in this particular area?
 
not here in mesa/ tempe that ive seen. usually people are doing 10 or 12 mph, kind of annoying. of course, double fines kind of makes that happen.
 
Ours tend to have either a lot of traffic in tight spaces (slow) or heavy enforcement..so not a huge problem here.
 
I drive by two every day and also noticed people go 60 even though the school zone sign means you go 40, and on top of that the speed limit itself is posted as 40. So those are two things that indicate the limit to be 40, and it would not surprise me if they can charge you for 2 offences: speeding, and speeding in school zone, as even without the posted speed limit, it's 40 during school hours (from what I recall).

I sometimes tend to go maybe 10 over and most cops wont nail for that if you are driving safely, but worse is people who tailgate and do everything to try to pass when you're already going above the limit. I would love to see a cop catch someone like that. These are the type of people that cause accidents because they're in too much of a hurry and throw safety out the window.
 
freaking school moms in SUVS fly through ours and run stop signs.

I posted last year about one in my neighborhood that would approach a stop sign by getting into the oncoming lane so the traffic had to wait for her.

I called the cops a few times and don't know if they did anything,but she is not pulling that shit anymore.
 
I think school zones for high schools are dumb as hell. If a 9th grader cant stay out of traffic he shouldn't make it past 9th grade.
 
This is pretty common. If you complain to the local PD about it, they will take a closer look and try to clamp down. We had a similar problem in our nbd recently...
 
Not here. The county mounties and State police patrol the 4 lane near the school heavily. Usually the ones I see pulled over are out of state.
 
The one school nearest us is set off the road 150 yards or so, they had the speed in the school zone upp'd to 45. The speed limit on the road is normally 45, I don't get it, but I'm not complaining.
 
Around here most everyone slows to at least 35-40km/hr (speed limit in school zones is 30km/hr). I find it frustrating when I am driving home, usually after 5pm and the lower speed limit is not in effect, but most people still slow down.

Haha that's a good point. Guess the issue is some schools change around all the time so 1 year a certain school might be grades 9-12, then they decide to expand and have 7-8 too, etc... so they probably just said "F it we'll cover them all".

I think the fines are higher in school zones.

I usually try to stick to the speed limit in school zones, but 15 mph is painful.
 
The signs here all say "When children are present" underneath the posted limit. So you only have to reduce your speed if it's somewhere around opening or closing time for the school. The one school zone I drive through on my way to work is 30 mph from the normal 40 mph, but I never have to actually reduce my speed because I'm never driving past when there are children there.

Some needs to post that video of that TV show speeders. Some guy went more than 100 in a 15 school zone

I got a speeding ticket recently in a school zone, my first ticket in probably 15 years. I just avoid that area like the fucking plague now when I'm driving or riding my motorcycle to work.

The signs here flash when the limit is in effect. So its only when school is taking up or letting out.

Are you saying the school zone limit is always enforced even when there is no school where you live? If so that would really suck.
 
our schoolzones are 18mph, outside the zone is usually 31mph.
most people go 25 or so..


I don't mind the implementation of them (they're recent..) at elementary schools, but at highschools? jesus christ.
If you can't cross the street at age 14-18, maybe getting hit by a car will smarten you up... or at least smarten up the gene pool.
