One is the CPU, one is the motherboard, and the other may be one of the diodes (could be bogus).

Finding the CPU temp is easy. Just load up an app that stresses the CPU @ 100% (Prime95, SuperPI, gaming) and see which temp goes up the highest. :)

OR.... after your system has been on for some time restart go into the bios and look at the hardware monitoring page. Note down the temps of each item (CPU, motherboard etc.) boot into windows... and there should be a close correspondonce between the bios readings and speedfan.

Anyone know how to pick the temps that Speedfan displays in the tray? (Right now it's only one, and it's "Temp1", which isn't the hottest). This is with a Biostar M7VIW (Via KT266A chipset) and XP 1700, a loaner I am putting together from leftover spare parts here, if that makes any difference.

Just go under Configure and then the Temperature tab. Select the temps you want displayed in the tray, and make sure the "Show in System Tray" box (lower RH corner) is checked for each one you want in the tray.

You can also rename the individual items to whatever you want (ie, change Temp1 to CPU, MB, etc.)

It sounds really easy, but the particular dialog box wasn't really obviously cut off at its default size. I hadn't realized there might be anything at the bottom right until I expanded the size of that box to find it (after reading your suggestion). Having become accustomed to the red and black colored pair of readings from MBM5, I'd hoped to get a similar pair. So far, I've only gotten a single temp figure in the tray from Speedfan (I neglected to try for a second selection using the shift or CTRL key -- need to try that as well, I suppose).

OK, it's later now, and I did try to Sfift-Click and CTRL-Click a second temp item. It only wants one at a time in the tray (at least so far with what I've tried), so I put the hottest of the three there. At idle, I have to assume that's the CPU. But I will eventually be stressing the system more, and we'll see which one changes the most, I suppose.
