Speeder Turns Around to Help Trooper

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - A state Highway Patrol officer who crashed while trying to catch up to a speeding motorist got some aid from an unlikely source _ the man he was chasing.

The patrolman, Frank Nowakowski, was uninjured in the crash Wednesday.

Nowakowski was nearing the end of his shift along Interstate 15 when a vehicle sped by at more than 95 mph in the opposite lanes.

Nowakowski crossed the median and took off after the driver, reaching speeds of 120 mph in an effort to catch up. Nowakowski said he had just decided to end the pursuit for safety reasons when one of the rear tires of his cruiser blew out, sending his patrol car careering off the highway and through a barbed-wire fence.

"This happened in a heartbeat," he said. "I had no idea."

Moments later, the man he had been trying to stop, whom the patrol identified only as a Bozeman man, was at his side at the crash scene.

Trooper David Braggs said the driver apparently was unaware that Nowakowski was trying to pull him over, but saw a large cloud of dust in his rearview mirror, knew there had been an accident and turned around to help.

The man, who later confessed to being late for an appointment, agreed to give officers a statement, and if nothing else, had the opportunity to apologize.

"It was very heartfelt," said Nowakowski. "He felt bad because there could have been some lousy consequences."

Capt. Butch Huseby of the Highway Patrol called it "amazing" and "fortunate" the trooper's car didn't roll.

I really hope the trooper didn't give him a ticket anyway. Then again, no good deed goes unpunished... I've met some really jerky cops in my time. A lot of cops will give a little professional courtesy to firefighters/medics, but I seem to run into the ones who won't even let a small violation slide with a verbal/written warning. Still, if there was an accident, shooting or whatever with a police officer involved, he gets first priority as a fellow emergency worker.

I might have turned around, but I wouldn't have stopped to help once I saw it was a cop.

I hate you. Just because he is a cop, doesn't mean you shoudln't help a potentially injured person.

QFT.

Turning around to help doesnt mean that the cop will let him off. I'm sure the cop was pissed that the dude was the reason for the accident.

Cops aren't people. Not in the way most people think of "people."

Anyone with any sense realizes this. Cops are dangerous things that can ruin your life. Best to be avoided at all costs. They can't help you, they can only hurt you.

In Texas, they would charge that guy with assault, and I'm not kidding, for the cop wrecking his car. Here, you're responsible for the stupid sh!t the police do when they're chasing you. If they t-bone a minivan full of kids, you're getting charged with several counts of murder.

If it came down to going to prison or fighting, I'd have no problem building a mountain of dead cops. That's part of their "job."

There are many easily imaginable situations where one cop is after you, and if you get away, you get away scott-free, but if you get caught, you go to prison based on his testimony. In which case you should run, jump, climb, drive or do whatever it takes to avoid getting locked up.

Does sitting in a computer chair with that gun strapped to your back get uncomfortable?

You need to get out of Texas, cowboys and indians died a long time ago.

Nah, after years of packing all day every day, you get used to it. With a nice holster, you barely even notice it's there. It does suck laying down on it though.

Cowboys and indians died a long time ago, but good guys and bad guys will be around forever. ;)

I'm not advocating the hunting and execution of police officers. I'm just saying that if someone is going to take away your freedom, police officer or not, you should do whatever it takes to retain your freedom. :)

Ever been locked up?

Yes, I have been locked up, and funny you asked, because it's so relevant to this thread it's not even funny (pm me if you wish). No I'm not going to shoot a cop for anything less than someone murdering my family.

If you are in clear violation of the law, vagrantly breaking many more laws in order to "retain" your freedom is some ridiculous sh!t. That's usually the approach fugitives take, seems to work well for them..

However, if you violated a law that you feel is clearly wrong.. then running away from cops to retain freedom wouldn't be too ridiculous.
