Speed question across LAN

Copying almost 1GB of pics/vids over to another PC takes about 15 minutes. Vista shows the speed at ~ 1.12MB/sec. Does that sound about right?

It's going from my pc (vista ult.) to a router and then to an older pc (xp pro) that I'm pretty sure has only a 10/100 card in it.

It just seems it should be a bit faster than this.

thats a little slow. The max of 10/100 is going to be 12.5MB/s the max of Gigabit is going to be 125MB/s
I'm sure other will ring in on what to do since it is so slow.

thanks for at least confirming it Nick.

I know my pc is gigabit and the router is as well. My wife's pc is an older dell that is 10/100 but I haven't transferred anyhting to hers in a while. I just had the feeling that it should go alot faster than it did.

Oh, I forgot one important fact.

It is transferring to a USB external hard drive connected to her pc. WOuld that slow down the transfer?

USB 2 or USB 1.1?

Cuz that speed is about right for USB 1.1.

Good question. I think it is 2.0 but I'll have to get into it later to make sure. I'm hoping that is all it is and no other issues. I may try transferring the same folder to her hard drivelater and see what that does.

Unless the external USB is part of the issue.

Still doesn't tell me what the issue might be.

When nothing is disclosed beside a "cry"," I have a problem", it is hard to offer any solution.

Some people like the Trial and error approach, I personally do not.

But hey it is my fault that I did not use my TeleMeta Congnition skills to know that you have a USB NIC.

He doesn't. The file is being written to an external USB drive.
