speed: *nix vs. windows 2000/xp (for gps/map, graphics editing, and dvd watching)

given the same processor speed, is *nix or windows 2000/xp going to be faster? is there much of a difference? how much faster?

just asking because i'm thinking of getting a laptop..

Still to vague... *nix contains unix, irix, and of course linux... SGI and unix machines usually have a much lower 'processor speed' defined in mhz/ghz compared to an x86 system... so if you're just comparing mhz then the sgi computers would kick any x86 box....

If you're talking about latest technology, an sgi workstation will still kick any x86 box at graphics....

My guess is that you're really looking for linux vs windows on an x86 box...

yup. basically i'm wondering this... if i buy a cheap laptop, like say p2 233 or something, where windows would be damn near intolerable for me, would some *nix be bearable?

I wouldn't recommend *nix for gps/dvd myself. You could use linux for graphics editing using GIMP however. I don't know of any GPS/Map programs for Linux, and DVD watching is kind of limited too(my hardware decoder is not supported).
