Speed diff for CDROM drives

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me the speed difference btw a 16x, 32x and 52x speed CDROM drive. No doubt the numbers look interesting, but what about real world performance ?

Totally depends on the drive. Real world a Plextor 32X could whip on a generic 52X, even in average transfer rate. Go to StorageReview and check their Leaderboard to determine what the best drive to get would be.

Hmm, ok. What I don't get is how isn't a 32x drive or maybe even a 16x drive enough for normal use? How much faster can the CDROM drive get after 52x??

my old kenwood drive was about 2.5x faster thana normal 32x according to sandra

That's the problem. My old LiteOn 31x is faster (and quieter) than a horrible 52x Creative CDROM. Somehow I think Creative CDROMs are hated here

I don't think I'll upgarde my Teac 40x anytime soon
I'm more concerned about the cd reading all disks, even scratched ones.

my mitsu 8x beats my generic atapi 50x and thats bad

Storagereview is a good place to go, but go over to http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ also. They have a good database of tons of cdroms, dvdroms, and burners. You can look at them for DAE speed and data speed.
