Question Speculation: RDNA2 + CDNA Architectures thread

I don't. I have really, really bad memories of Rage cards... I fact, I still have have some grudges. ATI Rage IIc essentially made my childhood gaming experience miserable.

I had a Rage IIc, never had any issues with it, other than it was not that fast. The Rage II Turbo (which I also had) was a fair bit quicker. Though both paled in comparison to my almighty Voodoo2.

Also had a Rage 128, which was a fine card. But when I got the very first Radeon, that was a huge step up. Except for games that were designed for Glide (Such as Diablo 2), Voodoo2 was a lot smoother, even that many years after launch, and with the Radeon clearly having more horse power. Goes to show just how good the Glide API was.

But, to your point, not sure the Rage name plate should be revived. But for something like shown above, I think its fine.

Yes, I see it more of a kind of "ludicrous mode" kind of mention than anything else.

During those times, if you didn't had a Voodoo you suffered, so it's pointless to hold a grudge against the Rages.
It was dated when I got it (at that time year, two or three felt like a decade). It was one of those Siemens market PCs. I had no say in what I got (obviously) at that time. After that things did change. It got upgraded to RivaTNT 2 Pro and the difference was absolutely humongous. Everything worked fine, no visual glitches and the performance was incredibly. Rage IIc was often slower than software rendering.

I still have quite fond memories of my Rage 128, which was also my first 3d capable graphics card. Still remember being impressed by this demo as a kid (created by futuremark btw!):

Sure it became weak rather quickly but was quite decent for games in 640x480 till 2000 or so. After that it became really painful.

Rage 128 was decent but the early Rage (Mach 64 GT and Mach 64 GT-B) cards were horrible products and they aged really quickly.
Siemens? As in the German company? Was it a Europe only product?
Yeah, Siemens-Nixdorf. Can't remember if it was Siemens only in those consumer PCs.

Starting with the TNT2 all those troubles started to disappear.
I remember those times, the hype for the TNT2 was immense! That was THE card that would put and end to the Voodoo supremacy and in the end 3Dfx never really managed to recover.
I had one entry model and got tired of playing Unreal Tournament. The performance and visuals where incredible.

Eh, the sudden materialization of a T-1000 inside a pyramid at 2:30 caught me completely off guard.

My guess is that this thread is going to fill up just after the presentation, 1st of sep.

Filll with what? Cries?
My feeling is that, if those craze Ampere prices are really true, I suspect that Nvidia is sure that RDNA2 will be a competitor to Turing, not to Ampere. I fear that Big Navi will go as far as between 3060 and 3070...
Pessimistic thoughts, yes, but still, given the retrospect isn't impossible.

ofc it's impossible since we know how RDNA performs and that RDNA2 will feature an 80CU flagship (only 2 less than what the 3090 will feature).

"Big Navi" will beat the 3080 easily and regarding the 3090... let's just wait and see. 🙂

Feel with what? Cries?

1: pricing has escalated to a sick level as of today.
2: RDNA2 is going to compete on some levels, on the 2nd of sep I'm pretty sure we'll starting to get the picture.
3: RDNA in itself is quite good for what it is. if they managed to double the physical size of the GPU and improve IPC/ clocks with 10%, we would have a serious contender.
4: NV always price the highest they can, if AMD steps in and starts taking marketshare, NV will of course price accordingly.
5: Look at point 2 again, then my earlier post.
6: My point was that rumours was scarce here, i'm betting on a landslide of rumours a very short period after NV has had their presentation. That's all really. As long as i'm not capped to 1440p gaming för 300 usd and below, i'm satisfied.

An AMD unknown GPU already showed up on openvr benchmark, 17% higher than the highest OCd 2080ti, 30% above average 2080ti score, and the cpu for the run was 4800h mobile CPU.

I think we can safely assume at least a 3080 competitor

It's not pessimistic, it's something completely different, even though it may actually end with *istic.

This guy has an interesting, hopefully true perspective on the RDNA2 launch (24:50):

He's been right about everything so far...

So do we know for sure what cards these will be competing with vs Nvidia?? I currently have a 2070 Super XC Ultra. I hear some of you guys saying it will compete with 3080's and some one a few posts ago claims only between 2060 and 2070? I wouldn't mind having a card that could out perform my 2070 Super for the right price..

The mention of competing with the 3060-3070 is complete hubris.

With you having a 2070 Super, the only way you will get more performance than that is by spending more than the 2070S cost.

Yeah it could easily be an ES at close to 400w though.
If there is a big Navi that is 2x 5700XT that’s still less than, what 24B transistors and at the largest rumored die size of 505mm2 makes it not much more density than Navi 10 (24B/505).
Just don’t see a high end part coming within reach of the 3090.
I expect some competitive SKUs though!
