specs on laptop...

The price is just a tad bit high, but otherwise a good deal for surfing, word processing, etc. If you're not going to be gaming(hardcore gaming anyways), you'll be alright. Just wish they would throw in a low end core duo. If you're able to scrounge up some more cash, save and do that. I think with just a little bit more you can shoot for an Intel core duo. Maybe someone knows a good deal off the top of their head.

but yes, looks good.

$800USD for an old tech laptop, no thanks. If you're paying $800 today you need either an AMD Turion 64 X2 or Intel Core Solo/Duo. Why buy old technology when the new stuff is the same price?

That is a much better deal, I'm just not a fan of Gateway's warranty/support. But its good for what you get.

Looks good, but I'd wanna steer clear from Hell and Gateway laptops because of their warranty issues.
Secondly, being in Canada, dealing with Gateway would be a pain.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Acer in the 2nd link I provided. Thought they were a decent brand to deal with.

Acer's not bad. Support seems hit or miss. Build quality on the low end models is eh.

EDIT For $899 USD you can get a Lenovo N100 14" widescreen Core Duo T2300 512MB 80GB DVDRW Bluetooth Fingerprint scanner. Better option than those IMO

You can also get a 14" Turion X2 w/ 6150 chipset, 1GB memory, and 100GB drive for around that price from HP/Compaq (the Acer equivalent usually has more stuff thrown in for $100 less)...
