ok pretty much what the title says
looking at tpu's review,
perfrel_1920.gif
the gpu would need to be 32% faster per clock to match up with the 780, but that's the absolute worst case scenario as the 780 clocks up on it's own and the 7970 doesn't so 32% is probably the highest percentage possible . So in conclusion, what specs do you think would be good enough to beat the 780 in perf/clock ?

32% is probably the best case scenario for the 780. If you look at a reference 780, it's about 14% faster than the 7970Ghz. Moving a couple sliders to increase TDP and temp limits, puts it 20-25% faster. Max oc aftermarket 780's vs. a max oc 7970s are about 30-35% faster.

So in order to answer your question, it depends on how you want to compare them. IMO, a 9970 with 2560 shaders, 1Ghz clocks, and GCN 2.0 efficiencies thrown in would match a 780 in general.

not feeling good about some of your figures (see 14%) but it really would be fantastic if AMD blew the 780 out of the water with their 9970. I just am starting to doubt that its gonna be twice as fast as the 780. As cool as it might be, i think that its really out of reach. And i think you are saying the same, correct?

Are you saying you expect those specs to match the 780 performance? So with this estimate a 2560sp HD9970 at 1200mhz should better the 780 by 20%?

3D Center compiles results from multiple reviews sites (6-10 in the link I provided). Some of those review sites test the 780 after it's warmed up and some test it cold which varies the amount of boost available.

I am 99% sure the 9970 will not be twice as fast as the 780 but I do have high hopes it will equal or surpass it. It better for as long as AMD has had to work on it.

I would expect those specs to put it around 780 performance and, if performance scales as well with overclocking as it does with Tahiti, 1200Mhz would be ~20% faster.
