Just saw a CL 600 ///AMG

Wait wut?

CL600 is the base non AMG car. If it's an AMG it will be a CL63 or CL65. Ebay badges ftw.

hmm, this brings about an interesting question (and ive seen both situations in my city)

who gets more respect, the "grownup" with an obviously well kept CL600 w/ fake AMG badges or the "kid" with an obviously salvaged, but real M5?

The way I see it, there are two ways that could play out:

1) The kid with the M5 drives like a moron and the car is obviously continuing to disintegrate under his care.

2) The kid with the M5 is resurrecting the car, albeit slowly, with his own time and labor and is learning along the way.

In scenario 1, neither the kid nor the grownup get much respect. The grownup obviously isn't interested in the car for what it is, but rather for the badge, while the kid obviously doesn't care enough to take care of his machinery.

In scenario 2, the kid gets huge amounts of respect because 100:1 he's going without other things that teens typically have simply because he loves the car and wants to bring it back to its past glory. Bonus points if the M5 is mechanically in great shape but it's just bodywork and an aged interior that's the issue because it shows that the kid is paying attention to the most important parts first.

How would you know the car is obviously salvaged? If I saw a kid driving a M5, the first thing I'd think of is that he's got some trust fund or mommy and daddy bought that for him.

Funny you mention that.

One kid in my dorm freshman year in college bought a salvaged E46 M3 (flood vehicle) and constantly complained about how the electrical system was trash and how nothing worked correctly. He sold it and bought an IS250, sigh.

Can't understand an adult putting a fake badge on their car anyways. Seems kind of childish to me...

well in my example, the kid seemed to be of russian descent and that kind of thing was popular among young russian kids at the time as a way to have a nice car without paying much since they had body-work skills. also, the huge stretches of primer in various areas on a relatively new car (v10 generation M5).

Ah, ok, that's obvious then. I was thinking you might have been going around grabbing kid's VIN's and running them to pick out the posers... :p

In that case, total respect.

Zero respect for someone who's car is flawless because they threw their old one away and bought a new one when it got scratched because they wouldn't be caught dead in a "beater".

Its common for Russians to do stuff like this. Their parents/relatives usually have the skills to fix up just about anything so they buy salvaged or heavily damaged AMG/M cars and fix them up to brand new condition. A russian girl I knew in HS had parents that made it their family business to do just that. She drove a salvaged C55 that I think her dad paid like 10k for, lol.

More Russian immigrants, less welfare deadbeats from certain other places IMO.

I wish I could do body work. I'm far too left brained for it. I can do engines, suspension, wire harnesses, and programming all day long, but I'd sand a hole in the metal trying to get it mathematically perfect like factory. It's not like you can look up a torque spec or voltage range for a rocker panel.

I keep telling myself I should take some auto body and welding classes at a community college, thinking that if I learned the proper tools and techniques that I could see that there *is* logic and mathematical reason behind it.

It seems that way, they all look like very hard working people who usually shun all forms of government aid and just try to do it with their own skills, or the ones I've known anyway.

I talked to her dad a few times about the work he did. He told me when he was learning in Russia, he would get a fender from a junkyard, beat it to hell with a hammer and then practice getting it perfect in the workshop using tools + filler + welding or whatever. He said he still does it on body panels that are difficult to fix or find. It could really be a neat hobby if you had the patience for it.

OP is Benz noob. This is common with Mercedes. If it's a CL600 or an S550, it's common to have an AMG badge if you have AMG rims or just a "sport package" on the car, even without an AMG built engine. I don't find it distasteful.

Anyone who knows what an AMG is, knows that a CL600 was not built by AMG, so they know they're not fooling anyone.

UMMMM No.

The AMG badge does not come in a little plastic bag with AMG wheels.

There are AMG cars and there are non-AMG cars.

All AMG cars have a significantly different drivetrain than their regular counterparts.

If you drive a CL600, you do not have a Turbo-charged V8 nor a Turbo-charged V12.

If you drive a C350, you do not have a V8.

Even if you put an AMG on it. It really doesn't magically make your car an AMG.

In Mercedes, there is an unspoken acceptable of AMG badges on non AMG built cars if they have AMG accessories, but the specific model is honest (saying it's a 500 when it's a 500).

Oh really? Forums I see ridicule people who buy Ebay AMG badges on their non-AMG cars.

May be some truth to what he says, there are an awful lot of CL500 /600s on ebay with "AMG sport packages". That would make me wrong and this person not a poser, it probably came on the car. I also learned that you can pick one of these up for under $20k with 50-60k miles... not bad for a beater damn. I did lol at 360 hp and 4500 lbs though (did some research and identified it as no newer than a 02 na v12).

There isn't much around here that makes me nervous, and usually there are nothing but basic low end E and C cars, and an occasional S, so naturally when something like that catches my eye, the first thing that I want to know is can I spank that ass. :)

The AMG sport pack doesn't put the AMG logo on the trunklid my friend says. Only wheels have the stamped AMG logo on them.

*laughs*

Nah, there will always be another E39 M5 out there and when I eventually get one I'll have my feet under me financially instead of heading into Law School like I am now. ;)

I waited 4 years before I found my 914 and almost 5 years before I picked up the 951. Time is always on the collector's side.

I saw one of those infamous v6 Corvette's today. Just noticed it has 98-02 body with 93-97 rims too. Worst fake badge placement ever lol, not even the right car.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Sadly though exdeath, besides the type-r hondas, I think the most spoofed cars around here are Mustangs. v6's love to put on the GT badges, not even in the right place most of the time, and GT's love to put Cobra items on their cars.

The best one I've seen to date:

Coming up on what looks like a Red '00 Cobra R (had the '00R rear wing) or a 03/04 Cobra (had the hood, front and rear bumpers, hood (if I recall), snakes on the fenders, proper side scoops, dual exhaust, etc. So I'm thinking ok, an 03/04 with a Cobra R wing. But still something wasn't right. All in all it was a pretty good job, except two things that stuck out when I got closer: flared out V6 rocker panels (hardest trim piece to get for 03/04 Cobra compared to the bumpers and hood) and, get this, a huge aftermarket 3.8 emblem where the GT/SVT emblem would be. There was no burble idling, and when he took off it was obvious it was a V6.

Most people would have bought it but I notice subtle things like the wrong rocker panels... or rolling up behind it, the lack of the 03/04 Cobra style black fuel tank cover, IRS, etc. And the IRS specific exhaust is very visible and obvious, hangs low, goes straight under the IRS, out to the side and back out the rear, no loop like over the solid rears, that is plain as day on a real IRS Cobra. And other touches like the spoilers/wind deflectors in the windshield wipers that nobody knows about except for serious SVT guys.

Most who do Fobra's usually mess up the rockers or the quarter side scoops, those are very specific to 03/04 Cobras and sufficient to identify real or fake from a distance in about .1 seconds. And a '00 Cobra R? Well lets just say that chances are you won't see a real one being driven on the street ever, there were only 300 made and most are in climate controlled garages or dedicated track toys.
