Speaking of Knives, Best Steak Knives?

Steak knives aren't cooking utensils. Find a set you like with good handles that won't loosen easily when put through the dishwasher.

Yea, no kidding. I always cringe when I see a good knife in the dishwasher, or stuck in a draining basket with the forks and spoons. They need to be washed, dried, and put in their block right away.

Steak knives are not "good knives." They are silverware, not tools for cooking. Steak knives go in the silverware drawer not, some useless block of wood taking up space on the counter that could be used for doing work. 🙂
 
Get Cutco. I thought they were a waste until I tried them first hand. A-freaking-mazing. My friend gets mad hookups through them, so PM me if you want to get her info and get a really good deal. She has better deals than 99% of the other salesmen at the company honestly.
 
Crate and Barrel has a set, one piece polished stainless handle/blade. Nice looking.

Steak knives, as Magnus said, are not cooking tools. Pick them like you do silverware.

Whatever works for ya. My steak knives are in the bottom section of the knife block on the kitchen counter. Set of 8 fits perfectly.
 
I've got a set of Henkels steak knives that work well. Cutco knives are all awesome, too, but I don't like the look of their steak knives...I prefer a wooden handle. Their trimmers are by far the best, though.

and these are cheap ones. I didn't want to go too ridiculous with the pricing. These are just a bit more than the ones I got for my mother.

You can also pay $200 or more for a pair of tennis shoes but, it doesn't make you an authority on footwear. You don't always get what you pay for. I promise not to snigger at your expense too much unless you're just dieing to pay my consulting fee of $60/hr. 😀

My mom once came over to my house for a party and she used my Hattori cleaver to chop a cross ribs (made a few small ding/bent on blade edge), then throw it in my utility drawer after she washed.

I was flabbergasted once I saw my Hattori, but what can I do because the damage is already done. It was my fault for letting my mom helped my ex with the prep.

As for best steak knives, IMHO any cheap set will do, as long as they are riveted.

Use a good stone and a steel and, your blade will be as good as new. No harm done, just educate your mom.

My Mom put some of my good knives in the dishwasher once...I gave her a good chastising for that.
 
Look at Mundial or Victorinox lines. They are good stuff. My brother sells them....www.madcowcutlery.com. Yeah its gay to promote, but he does sell them at a good price and he's not a sammer. Otherwise, look at Cutleryandmore.
 
If you need anything more than a cheap serrated knife with a good handle you're cooking Your steak wrong.

This comes down to longevity. A good knife can last a long time if treated properly. A cheap knife will not. You pay for quality, as with many things. I've done the restaurant biz, so I do know the diffrence. Cheap knives just don't last. Unfortunately, good knives find "new homes" lol.

Take it to your butcher. Most butchers will sharpen your knives for you for free.

Also, check with the manufacturer. Cutco has a warranty where they'll sharpen/replace any knife forever, regardless of what you do to the blade.

lifetime warranty on all knives (free sharpening, too), cut through meat like it's butter, lightweight, and they're dishwasher friendly too

just be careful with them... they're like little light sabers. it's really easy to cut yourself deep on these knives.

my neighbor growing up got a set of cutco knives as a wedding gift back in like 1960 or something. she still has them and they're still sharp. she only had to get a few of them replaced (free).
