I have a set of Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 5.1 Digital speakers, I also have a pair of Sony speakers from a defunct Stereo.

I'm thinking of using the Sony speakers (30w) as replacements for the front two satellites (7w) on the 5.1 system as they're undoubtably better quality.

Would this unbalance the sound having different front satellites compared to the rear ones? Or am I worrying about nothing?
 
Well, I don't know the specifics of the satellites in the cambridge setup..but I would be most concerned about the ability for the cambridge setup to drive the sony speakers. Id say just give it a shot.
 
It's not so much about watts but more of distortion that is produced @ the power desired and the placement of how far the Speaks will talk behind you...
 
You will need to balance the sound as the bookshelf speaker should be more efficient, but the impedence mismatch (if there is one) may make that go either way.

It shouldnt hurt anything to try.

I would agree with equilibrium the balance but bookshelf speakers are not necessarily more efficient...depends on the sensitivity and specs...
