Speakers wirrr when DVD drive spins up

Do you have an analogue audio cable hooked up between your SB Live and DVD drive? If so, mute the CD-Audio channel or unplug it entirely, and that will likely solve the problem. My guess is that the noise is coming from the DVD drive's DAC(they're usually low quality), so your SB Live is faithfully reproducing the sound.
