I just finished building my first computer yesterday. Everyhting is working great except the sound. I ahve the speakers plugged in and the volume up but I can't hear a damn thing. The only thing I hear every once in a while is the built in pc speaker in the tower when I'm prompted for something on Windows XP. Any clue what the cause may be? I haven't heard the bultl in speaker sound for years, do you thinik I have to disconnect that? Any help will be appreciated greatly! thanks

have you checked you BIOS? Different MB's you must go into the BIOS and enable the sound device.........
Check device manager?

Check your device manager to make sure the sound is working in the first place. control panel/system/hardware/device manager/sound and game ....

Also most of the time, people make the simple mistake of plugging in the wrong port for sound.

I found what the problem was...duh I never installed all the audio devices and drivers from the mobo disk. Everything is cool now. Thanks for the reply.
