I just put together a surround sound system for my mom and I need a little help. Its a 5.1 digital research system. 300w. Each of the speakers work but when i turn it on each of the speakers is giving off a really annoying hum. However when the sound is playing through the system the speakers sound fantastic. If anyone could help me i would appreciate it.

Are the speaker wires running near any power cables? Could also be a ground loop hum affecting the receiver.

Sure they are digital research and not acoustic research?

Also, to start isolating a possible ground loop issue unplug everything from the receiver except for the speakers. Check that the speaker wire is in the terminals on the receiver and speakers correctly (no strands of wire touching the chassis of the receiver ect...) and if the hum goes away add components back until you isolate the trouble maker. If you have other devices, appliances on the circuit try unplugging them.

Another problem could be the receiver's amp. Sometimes they can give off a hum, but shouldn't.

it could also be the output device. Like when I plug in my Zune to my receiver it makes a hum through the speakers when the sound is off or the device isn't playing.

I get a low freq hum when I hook up my PCs soundcard to my receiver. I havent been able to isolate the problem. Probably some grounding issue with my PC so I would make sure there is no loose wire touching somethind it shouldnt, and as others have said, check for looping.
