Speaker wires..

I just got an onkyo home theater speaker set and i was wondering if they come with the speaker wires? ...or even if so, they are prolly really short and i need to get some longer/better ones? anyone have some links to decent and CHEAP ones? monster is a ripoff.
thanks.

i got these...not really high end at all so i don't wanna spend a lot on wires.

I got a 5.1 Onkyo set for xmas and it came with speaker cables. They're fairly long and are color coded,(I was actually pretty surprised at how long the rear cables were) but they're like 20 gauge. I got a spool of 14 gauge at Radio Shack for like $25 to replace them.

so 20 gauge is bad? is higher number the thicker, better? or lower number is betteR?
and how do u guys mount the rears?...speaker stand?

Lower = thicker = better, to a point. Don't bother buying expensive cables. 14 or 16 gauge should be plenty, 12 gauge if you have money to burn or are running exceptionally long (50+ ft) runs.

If the included ones are long enough, no pont to replacing them. The speakers will not sound better unless the supplied wires are actually defective.

Anyone saying otherwise please provide a link to a double-blind test that establishes a difference in sound quality between 20 and 16 ga for speakers costing under $1,000.

I'm using speaker stands (although the set I have has bigger speakers than the set you're getting -- I have the HTS-670) and they're okay. I got them for $50/pair and they're adjustable and silver (and much better looking than the more expensive ones I saw at Circuit City). My only complaint about the setup right now isn't related to the stands -- the house I'm renting was pre-wired for rear speakers and had 14 gauge cables running through the attic and they aren't long enough to place the rears where I'd like to have them. :frown:

I dunno if there's any actual difference, but I can add that I didn't notice one when I used the 14 gauge -- the main reason I upgraded it was b/c the house already had 14 gauge running to the rear speakers and I had a little cash to burn.

well, my $100 speakers will be fine then?

20 gauge is bad IMO i run nothing smaller them 14-16

you can get a spool of it most places, if you have to run them a long way lower is better

um, how about searching a little and the measurable difference between 20 and 16 ga wire? As in several db of drop?

anyway, 12 gauge is considered the best way to hedge any and all confusion.

the stuff is extremely cheap.

right. my father got those. he has some small 6inch by 4 inch by 4 inch speakers. they hold the speakers but they tip easy.

nice part is you can run the wire up the base.

They also sell a set with wall mounts for surround speakers. for a little more. I would get that if you have any plans on a surround system (if you don't have one now).

edit: sorry didnt look at the OP link to the speakers. These stands should be perfect fo those. But see if they have the larger set for the surround sound speakers!

damn the one from walmart states speakers up to 2lb?...doesn't that suck? almost all decent surround speakers are that or easily more.

mine weigh 62 pounds, and are about 4 feet tall

The surrounds are 1.5lbs. Most stands will hold them fine. You should have the rear speakers about 2-3 feet above ear level. Front speaker should all be near the same height.
