Do I have to use in-wall speaker wire if I am going to fish it through a wall or use it outside?

not much. I mean, i don't care too much about sound quality, but I don't want to like burn down my house.

Last time I was at Radio Shack the In-Wall stuff was cheaper than normal wire for the same gauge and spool size.

It's just stronger+more heat resistant. Like someone said, probably to comply with building code.

We were trying to run a couple of new power outlets in our kitchen, and discovered that there are "supports" or "firestops" between the studs in the wall.

OMG Talk about a PITA. I had to have my father-in-law take a drill bit to work and weld on an extension so we could drill through it without haveing to cut another hole in the wall.

Lots of cursing was heard that day...lol.

I can't even imagine trying to run new outlets on the 2nd floor.
