I'm looking for some new speaker wire for my Z-560's, I'm thinking 18 gauge should be good enough. I found plenty of sites that sell monster cable that would work, but I'd rather not pay for the "monster cable" name. Any recommendations on good quality wire and places to buy them from?

Actually you can get a variety of different speaker cable at either Radio Shack or Home Depot for very resonable prices.

Was at Spec's/FYE last weekend and they had a roll of Monster Standard THX Certified 16-gauge wire, 50ft for $20.

Honestly, with computer speakers, the wire isn't going to make a whole lot of difference as long as it's a decent gauge; 18 would be fine. Just pick some up from Best Buy or some place like that. Hell, you can probably even find it at Wal-Mart.

Just use lamp cord(zip cord) prolly about 18g will do, it can be had very cheaply at hardware stores. If you pay more than $5 for speaker wire you be crazy. Unless it looks really cool or has nifty connectors or something.

Here is a good read which explains abit about speaker wire.

Here is an example of someone mentally trying to justify spending $30 a foot for wire.

Speaker wire and interconnects should be broken in (just like other equipment). Run them for a few days or hours with a break in CD, white noise (untuned radio station), or just play a CD repeatedly. Most wire will improve with time. Also, many speaker wire and interconnects are directional. They have an arrow on the jacket of the wire. The arrow should run in the direction of the signal flow. For speaker wire it should point toward the speaker, and for interconnects toward the preamp (for source devices) and then point to the amp from the preamp outputs.

If anyone ever tries to convince you of something like this, tell them they are a butt-narf.

merlocka: Thanks for the links, but I've actually seen both those pages b4. I did some more looking and found this this 16 ga Phoenix Gold 50' for $20. I know its over-kill but will the Z560's take 16 ga wire?, all I have access to is 12 ga in my home setup.

as long as you don't overdo it TOO much, z560's will take pretty much a wide range of gauges. the satellite ports are screw-in, and so you can fit just about anything in there. What you need to be concerned with is the woofer ports, as they're different, and may not fit large gauges.

The crap connectors on the subwoofer had a hard time with the dental floss that came with the speakers - you might want to check yours out, if they're as crappy as mine (and they probably are) larger gauge wire will pop the little plastic pins out :disgust:

What gauge is the wire that came with the speakers? I need a little more...five feet maybe. Also, what would you connect the two wires with? I've seen some that twist the two together...

One more thing...How far should the sub's port be away from another surface (desk wood, etc.) so that it doesn't shake it/distort the sound?

I have these speakers and am curious how much new wire would help? They already rock the house. What would you all expect from some better wire as far as performance?

Heavier guage wire usually helps transfer more bass signal....these certainly don't need that. Even with the bass turned all the way down, I still had to use my TBSC's EQ to turn it down further :frown:

I found a spool of 18 ga Acoustic Research 100' at Best Buy for $20, not too bad. If anyone else is planning on using new wire I wouldn?t try anything larger then 18 ga. 16 may work but it would be tight, not to mention over-kill.

I would guess it's prolly 22 ga or smaller, and as far twisting the wire together I wouldn't I pretty much makes the whole point of using better wire pointless.

As long as the port can move air its not going to affect the sound a few inches of free space should be fine.

Though some people might try to convince you otherwise, the only real difference a thicker wire is going to make is power handling and efficiency of that power, which can translate in better SQ.

for my home theatre rears (paradigm atoms) I just used monster 16gauge standard which costs about 25cents a foot.

The monster name didn't matter, but the matte rubber wrap was flexible and durable and sexy. Love it.

I've got $1.50/ft 12gauge up front for my mains.

I bought some 18-gauge RCA-brand wire, for the Z560s. The included wasn't near long enough, cuz I need almost 25 feet for one of the satellites (no signal degradation, right?).
I don't know if the 6 feet for the fronts will be long enough, but I'll probably use those for the front. RCA was cheap (7.99 for thirty feet, 8.99 for 50!). Not Monster Cable, but who the heck really needs those for their bedroom?

18 guage or the included wire will be perfect. Heavier guage is only needed for high end stereo systems. I use 10 guage for that which is probably overkill.
