Speaker recommendations

Any suggestions? I seem to be spewing out all sorts of possible problems. I think if I get the Momos, I'll have to get (or make) spacers of some sort so they can clear my window and such. Anywhere I can buy good ones? Or, if not, how would I make my own (I really don't want it to sacrifice any sound quality, either)?

I also think with spacers, I won't be able to use my stock speaker cover (grill). What should I do? It's pretty ugly without it.

I really like the sound of Boston Acoustic and JL Audio inside the car. There's a certain crispness that I enjoy from them. I cannot comment on Infinity speakers or Polk as I have not dealt with them before. Focals are typically pretty spendy, so I think they are out of your range. I have Boston Acoustics SL65 speakers in my doors of my daily driver. I have also installed these exact speakers in a '94 Civic, so I think you should be OK. I'm trying to remember what we did about the door panel...I believe we had no problems leaving the stock grilles on. In the particular car we did the install on, there were also some tweets up next to the door handle - do you have those as well?

Anyways, just be sure you watch for the mounting depth of speakers as well as the diameter. Most speakers will come with shims where you can screw the speaker onto and then screw that into the door panel so it will fit snug. The guys mentioning the Type-R and X components are nuts! 😛 The speakers have massive magnets!!! For my car, I wanted a great speaker that didn't require me to install aftermarket speaker grilles (going for stealth) so I went with the SL series from Boston. I believe there is also the NX series from Boston that are similar spec'd to the SL series, but are for shallow mounts.

I currently have Boston SL65 on my doors, SL95 in my rear dash, and FX3 in my front dash of my car. SL speakers are powered by an Alpine F540 and the FX3 are powered by an Alpine T-220. The speakers get so loud that it becomes unbearable to sit in the car when playing at loud volumes, so if you want quality AND quality at high volumes, I can assure you that Boston are surely to please. 😀

Yeah, I was looking into those as well. I wish I could do a comparison between the Polks and the Bostons, but I don't think any stores have them around here.

And no, I don't have tweeters by the door handle.

Momo's come with grills, the MMC6500's have star shaped ones that look pretty sweet, my older Momo's have horizontal ones that are bad ass. Stock grill covers suck man 🙂

I know, I just like having a stealthy install. The grill I'm talking about covers a big hole in the door panel AND the speaker. Without it, it's pretty ugly.

I need a quick answer to this!

I can get a pair of Boston Acoustics SX65 for $50 on ebay (I guess the guy is getting rid of his leftover stock). How would these compare to the Momos? I can get the Momos for around $100...but this is really tempting (and it looks like these won't be up very long. They were just put up recently).

So, what should it be? Go for the SX65 for $50, or spend the extra for the Momos? I'm totally willing to spend extra if the Momos will sound better.

linky to pic of mine I had to drill holes and it was a little work, but I think it looks sweet, personal preference I guess. If you want to cover them up it wouldn't be hard man.

Bostons should sound good, but they have that ginormous tweeter protruding in the center, unless they're super shallow you'd have an even more difficult time getting your stock grill back on than with the Momo's.

Hahaha. I don't think you understand. The grill that covers my car's speaker is not the circular grill that comes with speakers. It's a part of the door panel. If I leave it off, yeah, you can see the speaker. You also see part of the inside of my door (the metal part)...the big hole where the grill goes, the edges are ugly looking. They're just cheaply cut, and the grill snaps on there. This cover is much bigger than just the speaker. Oh well, I'll figure it out.

Just be completely honest. How will the BA SX65 sound compared to the Momo? $50 is REALLY tempting. MSRP is pretty much the same for both speakers, so this is a deal. And I've heard very good things about BA.

BA will sound good, as good? I have no idea I've never heard them in person, only thing you have to wonder about is how do they handler the lower stuff? Boston's typically have great clarity, but you listen to Metal where you might want bottom and mids more that highs.

Boston's aren't known for being a really bassy speaker, you see people who listen to jazz and classical drolling over them. I cannot comment directly on this model, I would search for some reviews. You'll never get great bass out of a 6.5 but Boston's typically mids and highs. Polk has great highs and mids too but also a decent amount of lower end. Metal does has a lot of cymbals & hi hat drum stuff so maybe the Bostons would be perfect.

Neither is going to suck, and the price difference while 100% isn't HUGE. I say go Polk, but than again I'm a fan boy so it's hard for me to me objective, also I've never heard these exact Boston's so really I shouldn't offer any opinion other than "find reviews" 🙂

Reviews were very positive for both speakers. I have heard that Boston generally doesn't have as much bass, but that's what the sub is for, right? My sub puts out plenty of bass. As long as the Bostons mids/"lows" blend well with my sub, I'll be happy. 🙂

I just went ahead an bought the Bostons. I'm really hoping they fit properly, because they're listed as both 6.5" and 6.75" (Crutchfield said they would fit, though). I think they'll work well, and it saves me money too. Plus, they have a lower RMS rating, so I won't need to spend more on a more powerful speaker amp. That, and my GF's dad told me to go for the Bostons (he's a big car audio nut).

I really, REALLY appreciate all of your help, and I'm sorry I didn't end up with the Momos. Had this deal on the Bostons not popped up, you had me completely set on getting them. 🙂

sub is for bass, but having bass in the front can be nice, I went with the momo's because they have good bass for a speaker. the Bostons will have good mids and highs, I don't need to hear them or read anything to know that. Boston is quality. It's good you went with your gut here, because you will like the speaker and 50 bucks off is 50 bucks off. Let us know how they sound when you get them installed. I'm going to buy the Polk SR's soon, I'm going to have to convience myself how good they sound because they cost so damn much. I should probably broaden my mind and look at other brands. Boston's stuff has always been worth looking at. You made a good choice

I'm not too worried about the bass, since I know Boston is high quality. Great mids and highs is best for my setup, so I'll be ok if they lack bass. Besides, I can feel the sub in my chest pretty easily (and not on super-high volumes)...so, I should be ok. 🙂

yeah with a sub that changes everything...you can go to speakers with better midrange and highs. Bostons are great they usually aren't so low priced.

the price is the beauty of E-bay, I got my polks 50% off, $50 for Bostons is a crazy deal. If you go to Best Buy, Circuit City or Frys for $50 bucks all you'll get is some Jensen or Duals, and that's if your lucky lol.

Hey, just installed my BAs today. At first, I didn't notice a big difference...but eventually, I could tell how much cleaner/clearer everything sounded. Sure, they lack bass, but at least my sub makes up for it. But, wow, mids/highs are fantastic. Even with semi-decent aftermarket speakers, I never heard such clarity and detail.

I have my 6.5" Blaupunkt coaxials in the rear currently. I'm very satisfied with my current setup, but do you think it would be a good idea to put another pair of BAs in the rear (likely the S65 models instead)? Would I get a better sound that way? Also, will a separate amp for the speakers really make my BAs sound better? (I'm still doing it...I just want to know what to expect)

Congrats on your BA purchase! 😀 You'll soon begin noticing so much more detail in your music at all volume levels. (sometimes you can even hear a fan or the ruffling of papers in some recordings - just 'neat' in the experience) In songs by Evanescence, I find it appealing to know that I can hear her lips move in several songs. 🙂

I can speak from experience when I say that Bostons *LOVE* power. I once upon a time had them hooked up to the HU amp and they got pretty muddy at maybe half-way in terms of volume. When I put them on amps, they just got so much better in every way. Clearer, cleaner, and maintain these specs at all volumes!

As for the Blaupunkts in the rear, many people just put whatever speakers in the rear for fill. This is espcially true if you have carpeting over them. (mounted under the rear of a dash) As long as it sounds great up in front, I wouldn't worry so much about the back unless you're going to image your system or go active with crossovers and start messing with time alignments.
