Take care with the M-Audio speakers, I've got a pair of M-Audio AV 40s, and they do have some static going on, and you will hear it if you sit next to them. I've always used them with my HDTV so I don't actually hear it, but I suspect that the standard cable isn't all that good. Might be dirty power issues as well though.

I got a pair of AV-40s after reading rave reviews. They sound decent, but the build quality seems poor. Mine hum, regardless of whether they're connected to a source, which is apparently common. I was pretty peeved when I noticed it at first, but I've gotten used to it now.

They'll do for now, but I plan to replace them as soon as it's convenient.

Computer speakers are for rookies.

Get a higher end sound card (or even old creative audigy cards are decent), use it as your DAC, output analog from it to a stereo receiver and get 2x bookshelf speakers (or if you can spring for it, Studio Monitors) and enjoy audiophile quality sound with your PC.

No room for a receiver.
No interest in the added heat.
No interest in another device to deal with.

Creative/Logitech/Etc blow, but I'm sure the Swans M50w's which IMO qualify for computer "size" speakers probably do not suck. 😛
