speaker question

i have a 4.1 system (Z-560's), if one of the speakers is not plugged in the sub, will it cause all the speakers not to work?

i dont get this, i reformatted, installed my audio drivers and all of a sudden, there is no sound coming out of the speakers?!?!?! any suggestions?
