Speaker placement in crowded living room

Picture of Crowded living room

got sick of listening to blu-ray and music through my TV, so I got the following items.
Onkyo 7.1 receiver (Model TX-SR505)
Set of Energy C-100 Bookshelf speakers
Energy C-C50 Center channel speaker
**will have a dayton audio subwoofer soon as well**

judging on the picture above..how do I set this up for optimal audio? I realize this may involve purchasing speaker stands for the C100's.

**also, the cat cannot be used as a speaker stand** she is too unreliable.

what about something like this?

do both front speakers have to be equal distance apart and high?

They should all be close to around ear level and same height. The distance apart can be played around with a little more than height should be.

would it be possible to build/buy speaker stands and move both of the things on the sides of the tv a bit further away?

Much better than the "on the ground" proposal from earlier.

Looks like you're pretty limited with placement options with those two furniture pieces to the sides of the TV.

At a minimum, I'd recommend finding something to put on that folding table so that the left speaker is at a better height.

As unfalliblekrutch mentioned, there's more options you can do with side to side movement. You might find it works better with the right speaker on the right end of the bookshelf and the left speaker on the left side of the table.

Stands would give you more freedom and allow you to move the speakers at least some distance away from the wall behind them, but your SO might now approve 🙁

we shall see.. my wife barely allowed me to get speakers that were black

What about wall-mounting the left speaker? You could wall-mount the left speaker above the folding table all the way to the left of the wall, and then place the right speaker on the far right end of the bookcase on the second shelf from the top (one up from your picture). That should put them closer to ear level and put more separation between them. Also, is there a reason you don't have the center speaker on the top shelf directly below the TV? That seems like it might be a better height for it.

the top shelf is too small for the center to fit.. it would either need to be on the shelf in the pic, or on the very top of the armoire above the TV

I suggest these speaker on a stand or a table. do not try to wall mount them. I have a pair wall mounted and a pair on table, both pair using as main TV speakers, so far I am not too impressed with the wall mounted pair. Plus, it's a bitch to do with cheap brackets (i assume u won't want to pay for the $100 pair original mounts) and you cat might rip them right off.

why not move the shire and add another bookcase?

I would get some stands like these for $29, and move that book case & brown thing with the rose & chest on it(what is that anyway, a table?.) Can you move the bookcase over in that corner on the wall opposite the computer?

As that shelf you have the tv on appars to be removable, I would just get another that would allow you to put the center speaker inside the cabinet.
