Speak of clutches what's with people riding them?

That's how my pops drives! Us kids don't need no hand brake on a hill

I've used my handbrake on a few occasions but unless somebody is behind me or the hill is insane I never do it and my rear slippage is negligible.

me too, granted I live on the glacial plain, though. If I lived in San Fran I'd probably my auto just to save myself the hassle.

I always use the handbrake when stopped on a hill.

And notfred is right, everyone I know rides the clutch on a hill unless there a total stop. IE. you are going up a hill and at the top there's a four way stop (pretty common in San Francisco). Are you gonna brake every time? *shrugs*

I dunno, but back in december, some of my gfs friends were waxing poetical on their "l33t" manual driving skills and they commented that an essential skill is being able to hold the car in place on a slope using just the clutch (and no gas).

I've been driving manuals for 5 years now, and I've never even bothered trying this. I can't imagine why you would want to.....

My boy racer friend does that . He is putting a 300hp engine in his Stealth though, so I guess he is smart enough to the consequences. Btw, he's not planning to put it in, he has it and will put it in, when he has time.

It's an essential skill if you're a l4m3r! I've never tried it either. I'm sure I could do it, but it's kind of like being proud that you can eat a can of dog food. It's nothing to be proud of.

I always thaught riding the clutch is when u keep it depressed when e.g. at a red light instead of taking the gear out. Which is bad also because u will wear down the disengagement mechanism. But what u described is the worst - double damage

Still have my factory clutch, 130K and it is still alright.
Should be good for another 20-30K at least, maybe more...

word. that's how my dad taught me to do it...seems to work pretty well too.

This is why I'm afraid to drive manual. I drive my car about once a week, but not as much as I'd want becasue of stuff like this. I think I should invest in an automatic

Starting off on a hill in a manual is just a matter of quick reflexes. Foot goes quickly from brake to gas, bring clutch up instantly to the mesh point, car doesn't even roll back an inch.
