It's unavoidable, it's a numbers game and the number of Spanish speakers in this country is growing to the point that it's taking over as an official language. It's especially helped along by capitalism combined with political correctness; business has found that they can increase sales by catering to people who can't speak English or speak it well, and suggesting we prevent them from doing so would be frowned upon. Kind of ironic, since English is pushed so hard everywhere else in the world, often required by schools as a second language.

i met a swedish girl a couple of months ago who said they are required to take 8 years of english in school. 8 years...that must have sucked, i hated taking english/grammar and im from here, but 8 years as a second language; how typical is this?

Wow, you people never cease to amaze me.

I suggest you guys go live in a country that doesn't speak English and we'll see who's calling on the catapult. What makes you guys think that someone can pick up a language in just one year? Not everyone immigrating to the US is young enough to pick up a language quickly and not everyone has the time to take language classes when they're busy working to feed their family. I know plenty of people who've lived in the States for over 10 years and they STILL aren't fluent in English. As much as I hate seeing the US turning into Mexico, you guys have the wrong attitude towards those who can't speak English.

Very typical. In China, they start learning English in the 3rd grade.

You really can get around in America, only knowing spanish, especially in California and Florida. But you'll find retards speaking any and every language. People like you're describing- exist speaking any language. They're just called fvcking morons.

Que?

They just need to invent an universal translator like ones in star trek or something, then we wouldn't have impatient people. Imagine what fools Americans look like when they go to foreign countries. Fortunately for the Americans, most people in foreign countries are accommodating and nice, instead of being assholes toward others who don't speak the native language.

Exactly.

I live in Phoenix...everything around my apartment is in Spanish. Just about every product in the grocery store has labels in both English and Spanish. It really doesn't bother me all that much.

Say that to the people in LA and San Francisco who owns million dollar homes and can't speak anything but Vietnamese or Korean.

America should be english only in publically owned areas.

I dont want to see mexi-talk anywhere, period. If they aren't going to decorate the entire nation in Korean in order to please me, then they sure as hell shouldn't have anyone else's language posted all around obnoxiously. This is America, we speak English and all the people b*tching about their "homeland" be damned. You live here, this is your damn home.

"Que."

LOL, reminds me of the scene at the drive-thru in "Dude, where's my car?".

"And then?"

Good rant.

It's not the fact that people don't speak English, since this sometimes can't be avoided. It's the fact that those who do not are sometimes incredibly stupid, deliberately ignorant, and stuck up enough about it that they expect everyone around them to cater to them simply because they don't speak the language.

Exactly. As per my second post.

This is really more true than anything. The fact of the matter is, stupidity is what impedes a person. Not being able to speak the language only accentuates the stupidity.

Oh.. and I never considered this a rant. Just an observation. Although the situation "bothers" me, it doesn't "anger" me.

The US census says that only 28M people over the age of 5 in the US speak Spanish at home and of those, 15M speak English "Very Well". We're not given a break down of the remaining 13M though imagine quite a few speak enough English to get by, but for now let's say they don't.

http://www.census.gov/population/cen2000/phc-t20/tab04.pdf

Assuming that all of the estimated 13M illegal immigrants in the US speak Spanish only (which is bullsh!t) and assuming that none of them were counted in the census, that brings the total to somewhere close to 25M non-English speakers. Less than 9% of the US population using the current figure for the total US population.

The report, Language Use and English-Speaking Ability: 2000, [PDF] said
55 percent of the people who spoke a language other than English at home
also reported they spoke English "very well." Combined with those who
spoke only English at home, 92 percent of the population age 5 and over
had no difficulty speaking English.
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www...eases/archives/census_2000/001406.html

I saw this on Wikipedia and a few other sources but don't have the time to check all the data. I'll include it just for completeness though.

Intergenerational transmission of Spanish is a better indicator of the future of Spanish in the United States than crude numbers of native Spanish-speaking immigrants in a given moment of time. Although Latin American immigrants have various levels of English proficiency, Hispanics who are second-generation American in the United States almost all speak English, but about 50 percent speak Spanish at home. Two-thirds of third-generation Mexican Americans speak English exclusively at home.

I won't say that there aren't places where the Spanish speakers aren't highly concentrated because there most certainly are but I wouldn't say there is a takeover in progress either.

You should see the lazy American/Canadian/Australian/British mutha-phookerz who are in Japan. 90+% of those who LIVE here can't speak Japanese worth 2 craps. Even if they lived in Japan for several years, AND if they have a Japanese spouse. On the other hand, 90+% of Chinese/Vietnamese/Koreans/Indians/"etc" who live here can speak passible or near-fluent Japanese.

Hilarious, and all too true. I used to work as a server in a retaurant, and half of the cooks claimed to not know english. Except, of course, when it was payday. All of the sudden, their grasp of the english language was on par with that of an English Professor at Harvard.

it's not a spanish thing. it's a stupid thing.

as many of you know, i live in vermont. up here, in the city of burlington, there are almost 20 FREE english classes. morning, night, afternoon whatever you want. did i mention they're free? and they can accomodate your schedule? and they're free?

now, most of the immigrants we have up here came via refugee status. some from the vc, some from kosovo, and the newest wave is sudan. refugee status entitles them to about a year and a half of free housing and food. now you would think that these people would take that time to get oriented to the country. but no. just no.

i know somalians that have been here for three years and *still* don't know how to use the shower. they fcuking stand in the stall and have a buddy throw buckets of water over them. no soap either. that's a big doubleyoo tee eff. they sure know how to braid hair though.

and then there's charlie. now, there used to be this club where they would descend every fcuking saturday night and all that would flow is heineken and jd's while siht happy hardcore and fcuking ancient techno played in the background. hey, made the bartender's work easier i guess. he just put two bottles on the counter and they pointed. sure enough, you don't give one a job and it's discrimination. when i got bumped up over like 20 of them at this factory you should have seen the resentment. been there for 15 years yet still can't communicate basic ideas. and why? well i dont know. the company offers an english program where they can study for 6 hours a week on company time and get paid time and a half. that's right. they study instead of work for six hours of the week and get paid time and a half. how many do it? not a damned one. sure enough they whine because they cant read the paperwork.

i'm a crazy.

When bilingual means doublespeak:
  • When English-immersion activist Ron Unz put Proposition 227 on the ballot in 1998, most Democrats opposed the measure, and many educators did, too. They had their reasons. They feared non-English speakers would not learn subject matter. They believed English immersion would be especially harmful to older students. But a funny thing happened. Proposition 227 worked. Within five years, the number of limited-English students who could speak English proficiently tripled.
ProEnglish Urges Democrats to Put Official English in Platform
  • "This might not be so serious if government and other institutions put the same emphasis on encouraging immigrants to learn English that was true in earlier times," McAlpin said. "But under pressure from special interest groups public policy leaders today are increasingly willing to abandon the melting pot ideal that has characterized American public policy in the past."

^^

The point is they shouldn't live in our country if they can't speak our language. If you've been living here for 10 years and can't speak English, that is just being a nuisance. You just aren't trying. I personally think there should be a 20ft wall at the border with electric barbed wire on top. The gaps should be heavily guarded and permission to use lethal force should be given. To pass into the country (unless on business) you should be given an English comprehension test. In conclusion, when you decide to come to America, learn the American language (English, not spanish).
