SPDIFF pass through audio

I have an Asus X58 Sabertooth mobo & i want to connect it to my Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS decoder/amplifier using the SPDIFF optical & get a full 5.1 signal & not a stereo signal, native pass through i think they call it. I'm in the middle of the build & i need to know if i can do this or if there's any software i'll need. Failing that which sound card will give me the function that i require? Thanks.

The only way to get surround sound through a digital connection is dolby digital or DTS. Playing movies will natively pass through, but most games and other software does not support. In order to get surround sound with non-dolby/DTS sources you need dolby digital live or DTS connect, which are software driver packages that encode regular audio as dolby/DTS for your receiver. I know the newest soundblaster (x-fi titanium HD) supports DDL/DTS natively. The Asus soundcards may as well, although I'm not sure.
