SPDIF interface not working

Hi
I've recently purchased a "USB to SPDIF converter"

http://hiendking.com/ha-info-u2-usb-to-spdifac3-dts-usb-to-spdif-converter-p-2810.html

for some reason - it won't play all channels like it's suppose to do.

i know the hardware part is good - cause when i go to the properties of the device and click on "sound test" - both in DTS mode and DOLBY, the reciever indicates it receives 5.1 channels.
but when I put an original DVD of lets say - "lord of the rings" - it only plays 2 channels. even when I use the menu and set it to dolby digital 5.1 sound - still - 2 channels. needless to say - when i put the disc in a dvd player - i works perfectly.
same thing withMKV movies that has AC-3 surround sound.

i realize-since the sound test confirmed than the device can produce 5.1 channel signal - the problem is something with software. but this is as far as i go.

suggestions anyone?

That sounds like your DVD playback software is downsampling to 2-channel before output, rather than passing through the 5.1 audio.
