Hello everyone. I have a machine that has started doing some strange things. It's running Win2k and has a K6-2 450 processor, 384 megs of pc133, and this is running on a FIC 503+ board. When I reboot the computer and it loads back up, I can't right-click to bring up anything. It will flash up and then disappear. Also, I went to start netscape and I double clicked on the icon and it took a very long time to load. After it started to load, it brought up multiple windows for netscape and just kept opening more. I have also had some problems with trillian as well. Sometimes when I type messages, it will cut the sentence off when I hit the space bar or some other key rather than hitting Enter. It seems like it does this after the computer has been running for a couple of minutes. It also likes to shut down when I put the cursor over the start button without pressing anything. I'm in the process of running Memtest86 on the system to check the ram but ANY other ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm not much of a troubleshooting guru and so I can use all the help I can get. TIA!

These are all basic suggestions, but since you did not say that you tried them:

Virus Scan
"Spy"ware remover - Ad-Aware is my personal favorite
A registry checker - RegClean - Although I am not possitive it works on 2K, or Norton System Check - if you have it
And finally... You may have a bad keyboard, or it is not plugged in all the way. Check your cable connections.

Let us know what all you have tried.

Ok.......here's what I've tried so far. I ran AVG and found no virus. I ran the western digital diagnostic test and the hard drive is fine. I've run several passes of memtest and no errors. I ran ad-aware and got rid of the spyware. I even ran a symantec removal tool for the w32/swem virus and that wasn't the culprit. I'm not sure what else to try. Any other suggestions? I'm thinking that I may end up having to format and reinstall.

All of your cables (primarily keyboard and mouse) are firmly seated?

And have you run a registry check yet?

If the answer is yes to both of these.... Then I am at a loss.

I would like to think we could come up with something that would keep you from reinstalling...

Final shot: Remove the mouse and keyboard from Device Mangler (Or manager if you prefer), and have windows find them again. Possibly reinstalling your drivers for them as well.

I am tapped out though.... I hope this helps you out.

I haven't run a registry check so far but I did make sure that the keyboard was plugged in. I'm thinking that I must've corrupted the install somehow. I don't suspect that the keyboard or mouse are the culprit but that might be an option. Thanks for taking the time to help! I'll try the registry check and see what happens. :)

Ok......I ran RegCleaner and then defragged so we'll see if that fixes the problem or not. :)

Your welcome!

Glad I could do you some good.

While we are on the topic, a regular regclean and defrag schedual is a good idea. If you do a lot of downloading/installing - uninstalling, it should be more frequent, but about once a month or two is generaly good.
