i dunno, if i was trailer trash in my own country, i don't see a reason why i wouldn't sell out to some other country that wouldn't have such a low opinion of me

You have a point - but it only applies to Penelope - Paz Vega is considered a "serious artist." She's supposed to do low-budget serious films in Spain or at least in Europe. And certainly NOT a big budget film with Sandler.

No, you're right. They are Spanish, not Hispanic. Hispanic, even in it's broadest use, refers to persons with ancestral TIES to Spain, Latin America, or the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.

Spaniards are Spanish or European, but not Hispanic.

Depends on who you're talking to.

One example (of many) is the US Census Bureau, who count people "whose origins are from Spain" as well as "people identifying themselves generally as Spanish, Spanish-American..." as Hispanic.

But they would be wrong. Hispanic is a term invented in the US to refer to a large minority population, their common link being that they come from countries which many centuries ago fell within Spain's sphere of power. Spaniards have never formed part of this minority population because there is no signifigant Spanish population in the United States. And those that are here are generally students. So the need for a descriptor for this particular population had nothing to do with Spaniards.

That was tongue in cheek - I am speaking of the expectations of serious Spanish film-goers. Of course she can go get rich in Hollywood (or try to) if she wants - but many fans, myself included, fear the end of her career in quality film. That said, Penelope Cruz, has not COMPLETELY sold out - she did an excellent Almodovar film recently, and an Italian film a couple of years ago called Non ti muovere where her portrayal of a street prostitute was STUNNING. She can act, so it pisses me off to see someone like her in that crappy Indiana Jones wannabe last year. I don't want to see Paz Vega (possibly an even greater talent) go that route.

Just my opinion

Can anyone tell me what happened in last 10 minutes? I missed it due to a cable outage.

So in other words, she's not supposed to make money in order to make her fans happy? Is there anything preventing her from doing both the low budget and big budget movies?

Orginally I just went to see this for the restaurant side of things, and because Sandler's character is loosely based on Thomas Keller of TFL. I found myself actually enjoying the whole movie though, apart from a few annoying scenes.

I would watch it again.

In reply, I quote myself (speaking of Penelope Cruz):

To answer you more directly, I believe her artistic integrity should prevent her from making bad films, not the opinion of the public. And that "film" she made last year with McConaughey doesn't pass the straight-face test (meaning you can't keep a straight face while saying, "yeah, that was a good movie").

I want to continue respecting Paz Vega as an artist. Everyone can make a mistake in choosing a role, but selling out is something altogether different.

It was decent. By the time I saw it, I had fallen for all the critical praise and was expecting something with a little more punch. It was one of those movies where you watch it an afterwards you think it was cute but you aren't likely to list it as one of your favorite films. To me anyway.

I don't know about all these expectations of Paz Vega. Seems like a stretch. It would be more shocking to me if Gael Garcia Bernal went mainstream hollywood. If you want to lament someone who went mainstream after a lot of great artsy flicks, mourn for Antonio Banderas.

Excellent examples both.

******SPOILER*******

Adam Sandler's char comes home early to find his wife and Flor are having an Affair, he totally flips out, gets in his SUV and just drives like a man possessed, loses control and dies. A sad ending, but done quite well. :(
