spamnet was touted as awesome but it failed to integrate with my outlook express despite much time spent
troubleshooting through cloudmark's support page.

i contemplated spam inspector until some of the reviews (on download.com) pointed to ads that litter your outgoing messages
and a list of other troubles that did not make this an atttractive solution either.

any suggestion from anandtech users would be much apprciated. i hope this thread will prove useful to others as well.

Syzygy, I'm quite sure you're an intelligent, savvy software user, but I believe you neglected to read one very important piece of information on Cloudmark's site:

SpamNet supports Outlook 2000/XP.

Support for Outlook Express
coming soon.

I'm no detective, but I think that may be why you couldn't get it to integrate. Just a hunch.

LOL. Well give spampal a try. I've been using it for the past several mos. and it's been very effective.

I concur. I installed this for my wife, and it cut her spam from probably 50 messages a day to 2 or 3. It's free as well.

*edit* - it's located at www.spampal.org. It *can* be a pain to set up, especially if you use Norton AV (which she does), but once it's working it does a pretty nice job.

You could try e-mailing or ISP about the spam. My service provider put me on SpamAssassin at their mail server and it has stopped the spam. The best part of this is this service was free from my ISP. I have no software on my computer taking up room on my hard drive and I did not have to configure a thing. You may want to check your ISP to see if they will provide a free spam screening for you. My ISP does not have any info about this service on any of their web pages so I did not even know they had this service. It was the e-mail I sent them asking about spam that I was getting that was not adressed to me, that got me hooked up on this service for free.

Although the spam filtering service provided by the ISP is definitely better than nothing, you have zero control over the spam filtering rules. What if your ISP's spam filtering rules accidently blocks some of your valid mails because they included some words or description that are deemed as spam by the filtering rules? There would be no way of finding out if such mishap is happening unless the sender lets you know via another form of communication.

Both popfile and spampal take virtually no disk space and are very low on memory usage.

My ISP gave me a password and web address were I can check and see what e-mails were blocked from my account, so I do have control. I can read a text based message of the e-mail if I want. If it is a e-mail from a address I want to keep, I send my IPS a message of that address or addresses I want to by-pass the filter and let through. So far the filter has worked very good for me. 🙂
