Good way to tell is to use a different email every time you sign up somewhere. Something I never think of doing myself though... basically just add a number after. This is easier if you own your own domain and control the email server. Just needs to be a bunch of aliases that go to one mailbox.

If you get spam then you check what email it was sent to and know where it was used, then you know they sell info.
