Spam (pron) ads in side margins know where I live!

How do they know where I live? I cleared out the temp internet files, cookies, etc, but they have my city down and customizing pron ads accordingly.

I looked up every whois-type of query on my IP, but not sure how they come up with my city, as my ISP (Verizon) comes back for the IP in a totally differnt location.

Big Brother is watching.

the only way i know of is really through your IP. although you are right the although the where-in-the-world type ip services never work. they get the country, but my ip shows up near Tel Aviv. i'm all the way up in Haifa.

I have seen them where they think I am in DK becuase My VPN connects through copenhagen.

Yeah, they check your IP, which will usually come out to the area your ISP is connecting you from. This can also change from time to time. Try connecting with a proxy, you'll see they don't really know where you live afterall. Go here and enter your IP in the top right. They read the same info.

I think that one of ways that they do it is through the visited links cache or similar. I believe there are some Firefox add-ins to prevent them, such as SafeCache

there is a very simple php global variable that will return the users IP to the server. then they can in turn use that to find the city you are from.

They'll get your city right, but the chicks are not really your hot neighbor. I've seen the same pic for Milwaukee as for San Diego, unless that girl moves back and forth.
