Spam in Gmail account exploded!

I went from a few pieces a day to find 41 spam messages in the spam folder in my Gmail account. What the hell happened? Has this happened to anyone else?

I have actually gotten about 20 pieces of spam to my gmail account over a few months time. The only thing is i have never onced used that email to send anything. I just signed up for it and that was it. i have no idea how they even got my account name.

not 1 piece of spam ever to gmail..

of course only 10 people in the entire world have that address =P

I sign up for everyting w/my gmail account, and the only spam i've gotten is ebay sh!t (like 4 msgs)

I get like 1 or 2 a day... and it's caught by the spam filter... like yours. So why the complaining?

And it's pretty obvious why you're getting more... your name are on more spammers list, who are probably trading/selling to each other.

I've gotten 4 spam messages since I got my address a couple months back.

You gave your email addy to somebody, who gave it to somebody, so on and so forth.

I have gotten 0 spam in about one month of usage.

With the exception of one account, I have never had spam problems (knock on wood).

Nigerians seem to like emailing my account... like once every two weeks. Doesn't really bother me though.
edit: I never signed up for anything with the account either.

I'm getting about 4 a day. They all have the exact same message starting with something like, "We tried to contact you earlier about... mortgage rate..." They all have different subject lines and different senders.

I did get an oddball one from a guy living in "EUROPE SPAIN" who had gotten hold of a large number of Euros from a guy who died in the Alaskan Air flight a few years ago. He wanted to set up a deal that would be "mutually benefitial".

spammers will sometimes send out spam to generic emails at different domains :

ie: paul@gmail, paul1@gmail, Paul2@gmail... etc etc

so if your email is pretty basic, that is most likely why you are getting spam. ( i have never gotten spam in my gmail box)
