SPAM From anandtech?

I was just wondering if anyone else got a message in their inbox from "Headliner e-mail news <Mailinglist@headliner.nl>" with a subject of "Hardware news @ Headliner".

I never subscribe to any lists or give that address out to anyone. I normally use hotmail for anything that might cause me to get spam. In fact, the only non-aquaintanc/business with that address is anadtech. If anyone else got that message, it might mean that they are selling out our information on mailing lists.

This is purely speculation at this time, but I would like to know if anyone else got the same message. If so, I will be really pissed. Let me know.

---

AnandTech Forums does not sell or give the email addresses of our members to anyone. Period. The only exception is to law enforcement agencies, etc. when a a specific member is shown to be involved in wrongdoing.

< update >

We have determined that the spammer is a member who registered on 04/02/2002 as scannert. He has a total of three posts, and all of them have a link to headliner.nl. One is in this thread, and two are in this archived thread.

We will file a formal abuse complaint about this person, and we have banned the IP range for their server. Since those who have received this spam have the actual email, you should forward it to the abuse address mentioned earlier, abuse@inter.NL.net.

We do not know if will do any good to forward it to abuse@headliner.nl, because they are a mailing list site. Writing them could possibly cause them to send more spam. Therefore, we recommend that you block all email from this domain name.

i actually just got that today, which also surprised me. i don't subscribe to any lists either. i have no idea where it could have come from.
🙁

I got the same thing, just minutes ago. Someone is harvesting info from our profiles. :|
My primary email account has been pretty much spam free, but now this! 🙁

but anyone can look at your profile if you have the email address shown. that is why i don't have my email address up on my profile. it is my work address and if someone wants to get in touch with me they can send me a PM

Since Nihil got that message also it leads me to believe that maybe they are selling our information.... I am getting really aggrevated now. I'm willing to bet that several others got that message as well.

Please everyone check the mailbox that you used to sign up here and post as to wheter or not you got that message too.

Got this too. The only email I've received at the address in my profile that didn't involve some FS/FT deal.

ur profile gives away ur email address..it is very easy for someone to send u spam by just a small glimpse on to ur profile

I got it too, and that was my first thought (spammer gleaning the forums for addresses). It's a damn shame too. Maybe we could talk to the mods about making the email harder to find, or making it not required when trading in the FS/T forum? I'll go post in FI and direct them to this thread.

No, Anandtech is not selling your information. Use your head.

You can't blame them. Some people blame the first thing they think of and refuse to use common sense. I got it too. Save it and open the HTML file. Look for *anandtech* and think about the code. It didn't come from AT.

maybe someone should send an email to the abuse department if this gets any worse?

The mods might be able to check user names based on ip and see if anyone's matches that one (or is in that range). Hopefully it was someone who registered as a user, but I have a feeling it wasn't. Either way, I'm almost positive it has to be someone who did it the hard way, pulling our emails out of our profiles one by one. I really dobut Anand would sell our information, especially to another hardware site.

I wonder if it's possible to make it so only registered users can view profiles in Fusetalk?

I am not necessarily blaming them. However, if a mailing list is sold to a company there is no guarantee that we would see anything about the original company that sold them.

Again, I was only posting to see if anyone else was getting that message.

If anyone has a spamcop account, I would strongly recommend that they report. If you don't have one, all you need to do is signup and then send the message headers.

I'll also report when I get home from work in the morning. Thanks in advance.

I got it too..guess i'll disable my profile until I need to visit FS/FT..no way to stop spam with cox.net's crappy e-mail service.. 🙁

I have not gotten yet. I have disabled my email visibility for the time being. I doubt I'll ever get this particular message get it.

Spam happens. It's a damn shame and all, but get over it.
