Spam filtering

Ok, I have a pop3 mail account through my ISP. I currently use Thunderbird, which spam filter is almost 100% accurate. The problem I'm having is I like to run a mail check applet to tell me when I have new mail, and most of the time when it says I have mail its spam. Is there any way I can setup some sort of a mail server on my computer that checks and downloads messages from my isp's pop3 server, filters the spam, and then I can connect to that server and get my mail (minus the spam) that way? I think it can be done with spamassassin? Any information would be appreciated.
