They apparently caught me... <whispers in guilty tones> MASTURBATING!

Are these scammers from like the 1950s or something?

I mean, if they caught me jacking it to MLP smut while doing a Rainbow Brite cosplay, then they'd be cooking with gas. But since my webcam isn't plugged in, that's never going to happen!

That happened to me a few months ago, someone wrote that they had videos of me masturbating and that if I didn't give him $1000 he was going to send it to all my contacts, I contacted the FBI, first I went to my local police station and they gave me a website to file a report but the website said my address was slightly outside the LAPD jurisdiction, so they told me to go to the sheriff's station.

I went to the sheriff's station and they gave me a FBI website to file a report, I filed the report then I called them and they said they've been getting a lot of these reports and that's its just a scam email.

What scared me is that he said he was going to send it to all my contacts and I have some family members who are minors, so if he did this I was worried id get arrested for exposing myself to minors.

Another thing that scared me was in the email it had my own email as the sender address and the dude said he hacked my email, the FBI said that it's a trick and that it's not really my email, but I'm not so sure.

I was also worried that if he really hacked my email he would be able to post the video on websites I visit like anandtech, reddit and YouTube and I was going to get banned on these websites.

I just pay these off whenever I receive them because if the hackers took time out of their day to watch me masturbate they deserve every penny.

Oh, I know you got the email, I've gotten maybe hundreds of them. I'm talking about the rest of it, where you went to the LAPD and they were all too happy to be able to tell you it wasn't their jurisdiction, etc. This is 100% a scam, it is not in any way legitimate. Any time you get an email that's from your own address that you didn't send, it is guaranteed to be a scam. It's incredibly easy to fake an email from address.

So, for your own comfort, make sure you cover up your webcam when you're jorkin' it.

LAPD gave me a website to make a report and the website told me my address was outside the LAPD jurisdiction.

Couldn't someone hack your email then send a email to yourself?

I've sent emails to my self for important files like my data for the website I'm trying to build.

You should have asked them to prove it by describing what you were wearing, what who you were sitting on, unique physical identifiers, etc.

Or asked them if they want to join your techno laptop gaming charity in a van crew, but who will pay for the airfare from India or Nigeria?

This is the least likely scenario, if they hacked your email, they'd probably just reset your passwords for anything financially associated with the account and drain your funds that way.
All this really means is that your email address is probably on https://haveibeenpwned.com/
 
not exactly a scam. I got one of those several years back and it came with an old, outdated password that I used to use everywhere and no longer use....probably from, I'm assuming Newegg account because that place is a haven for data theft (I think they actually sell personal info to scammers).

I did freak out a bit but realized that they certainly don't have any video of me yanking the chain, but even if they did, so the fuck what? I don't care who they'd send it to.

I mean, it is a scam, in that they don't have a video of anyone masturbating, and they're threatening people to get money out of them by way of sharing a password from one of many hacks years ago to "prove" their legitimacy.
Is that somehow not a scam?
 
I have zero spam in the two accounts I mainly use. Might be some in gmail, Haven't logged into that for a couple years, but it was always pretty spam free.
