Spam call blocker

I've been using Mr. Number on Android for a while and it's good at intercepting spam calls (not even a ring, then pops up a msg it blocked a number) but seconds later I'm getting these telemarketers leaving me voicemail instead, which I have to proactively delete. Shouldn't a call blocker just hang up instead of sending them to voicemail - don't see a setting? I wrote to their support with no response.

Am I the only one experiencing this? Is there something better out there? I don't want to simply block all contacts not in my list.

I haven't used it in a while, but Truecaller is one of the better ones.

what phone do you have?

on the pixel this is build right into android

Note 3 - on Android 5.0

What does it do now exactly? Need something like a national blacklist, not something that is just appended to by me.

My wife has an S7 and I installed Mr. Number on there too, not seeing any default way to do it. But I don't think she gets VMs - thought they were random with that anyway.

If you are rooted there are a variety of options. The best I can think of is Root Call Blocker Pro but there may be better ones.

She doesn't have this option?

I use Verizon's call \message block functionality on the website.
If you have verizon, Log in with your account, and you should see options to block specific numbers.

Not sure what good that would do other than identifying the caller - does it actually block known spammers against an outside list?

Mr. Number is perfect other than sending the caller to VM. I saw in Truecaller that there's an option on how to block calls - Reject Automatically. Not quite sure if that also sends them to VM yet - or how well the app will work overall.

It will tell you if it's a spam caller and give you the option to block them in the future.

It's always a varied number - which is why a national shared list is better. Sometimes on Mr. Number there's numbers that come up and you can read others' comments which also helps.

I don't think you can reject or hang up on a ringing call without sending it to VM, unless you simply turn off your voicemail.

Maybe using a third-party voicemail service/app that can deny blocked calls from leaving a voicemail.

An app called should I answer has a option to answer and hang up immediately so they can't leave a voicemail.

Thanks, does anyone know if these companies record who "picks up" and in turn uses them for further telemarketing lists? Just curious how they work.
