Spain may send more troops to Afghanistan, but will still leave iraq

"In Afghanistan there was, in fact, a terrorist origin, and sending the troops was in legitimate defense of the United States, whereas in Iraq that wasn't the case," said the high-ranking party official, who declined to speak for attribution because it is "a matter that needs to be taken up after the new administration is sworn in."

While that's a nice gesture, it's also a minor point. Spain's main contribution to the Iraq situation was diplomatic support, not military. The new government did its damage (to the POV of Bush and his supporters anyway) not by deciding to withdraw its troops from Iraq, but rather in making a huge theatrical-style production of it. While i doubt Bush would have been happy if Spain had quietly and discretely drawn down its forces in Iraq, the moral support was the bigger contribution Spain was making.

This is the best decision they can take. Sends the right message to the terrorists, while making sure the misguided policy of the previous goverment is fixed.

Plus, 1300 troops will make more of a difference in Afghanistan than in Iraq.

What message does it send to the terrorists in Iraq? Or do you think an Iraq "resistence" group is blowing up Iraqis?
