Spaces (not mission control) in Lion? Any way?

So to be honest, the one thing really stopping me from upgrading is the lack of Spaces. I really hate mission control; it's NOT the workflow that I want. I've been searching around and all I can find is people writing dumb tutorials on how to make it "act" like spaces. These people clearly never really used spaces, because Mission Control is nothing like it. It sucks.

Has anyone come up with a hack or something? Google has failed me.

TheStu is confused... where is the issue coming from? I used to use spaces a lot, but that was with the Leopard beta, so a few years ago. Is it the lack of 2 dimensionality?

Lack of 2D and the fact that the "preview desktops" are way too small, so it's not a quick drag/drop like the old system. Also, I hate that you have to explicitly add desktops.

I'm so angry... Spaces was the smoothest, slickest, best implementation of any virtual desktop environment, but they canned it... WHY!? 🙁

I agree. I had 2x2 baked into my computing since linux mandrake 7.0 (1999). I love it and used spaces in snow leopard quite happily.

I'm still struggling to like mission control and don't like it much at all.

Yes. This. This is my exact feeling and experience. Linux in 1999 got me hooked to this workflow.

Now if only someone made a good, thin-and-light, powerful laptop with GOOD hardware support under Linux. Damnit - nobody does. 🙁

If you add a desktop in Mission Control, you can still do control-arrow to get to it. Something that appears to be lost is arranging them vertically, however.

...which is the big thing that is missing. However Apple seems to want to treat desktops and laptops like they're iPhones.

for me, its expose thats stopping me from going to lion. i *need* to be able to see minimized AND all windows. i dont like how mission control groups windows together and if you have multiple windows open of the same app, it hides them behind one another.

until there is a hack/fix to get it back to 10.6 expose, im sticking with snow leopard indefinitely.

I only used spaces once in a blue moon, but when I did, it was a lifesaver. On a 13" MBP, screen space can be at a premium. I somehow missed the fact that spaces is gone before I upgraded last night. Guess its one more thing to get used to.
