It has to retire.
There's no way to get astronauts to/from since they are discontinuing the shuttles.
Government morons.
Sell it to the highest bidder. Let them transport the mega-rich to it for space vacations.
Did anyone truly believe the space station would last forever?
I bet some of the shit aboard it is already obsolete.
Forever? How long has it been operational? Construction isn't even complete for crying out loud.
And as far as things being obsolete, if the station is doing what it is supposed to and supporting human life while zero g experiments are performed, then I don't see how it could be going obsolete. The experiments are ferried to and fro along with the crew so that is moot.
1) The US portion will be finished when the last shuttle flies THIS fall.
2) The current plan called for ISS retirement in 2015. It is unlikely that this will happen since completion took longer than originally hoped for. NASA, Congress and the Administration have to and are working on funding past this date. Plus the US doesn't own the thrusters needed to deorbit the ISS, the Russians do.
3) for those who like manned space flight the ISS is finally serving as a test bed for long duration exploration. We're working the kinks in long durationregenerative atmosphere and water reclamation. Plus in 2012 we're supposed to get the experimental VASIMR plasma drive.
4) For those who hate manned space flight (looking at you Dr. Pizza 😉 ) the amount of science being done on board has rampped up significantly when we went to the larger crew. Plus the Alpha Mass Spectrometer should fly later this year.
5) As to the ISS being obsolete, well it's only obsolete if you think running a network of 386s is obsolete! At least the laptops on board are last years model. 🙂

Wow. you get the best job evar award.
That would be cool. Kinda like Richard Garriott did.
Really there probably is a market for leisure space travel. It would be VERY expensive, but bet they would get people with lot of money who want to actually go in space. Make a bunch of hotel suites and stuff in the station lol.
Older tech doesn't mean obselete.
Mission control does needs janitors, too
He just said he works there.. didn't say what he does.
Gentlemen, we've done it! We've completed the human race's greatest technological achievement ever! And with so many countries working togeather!
*checks watch*
Aaaaaaand...... She's now retired. Take it away boys!
