We all know what NASA stands for: Need Another Seven Astronauts ;)

Trick question?
NASA lost a bunch of astronauts. However, the Russians lost dozens of scientist and engineers when one of their R-16 blew up on the ground.

An investigation into the tragedy was immediately ordered by Nikita Khrushchev and headed by Leonid Brezhnev, future leader of the Soviet Union. The commission set the official death toll at 90. This tally included 74 who perished in the initial explosion, 57 of them military personnel and another 17 civilians. A further 49 were injured, and 16 of these later died of their wounds. An additional two bodies of suffocated soldiers were found after the official report was completed, raising the official toll to 92 (74 military and 18 civilians).

Brutal way to go.

If you want to get technical, they're german computers, AFAIK.

Russian software though, iirc.

edit: and if you've ever driven a 20 year old Audi, you know all about german electronics failing ;)

Some guy's sig from a forum I go to:

"In 1936, the Germans used their mastery of engineering to produce a Titanic-sized blimp they called the Hindenburg. To make a long story short, it crashed and burned. Some say it was because they filled it with Hydrogen. Some say it was struck by lightning. If you want to know the real reason why the blimp failed, go buy a used Audi and take it on a road trip. You'll know what I'm talking about."

:D

Yeah because a consumer PC operating system is the same as a government regulated space station operating system.

One is used by millions of people and connected to the largest network ever known, and if it crashes Little Suzy loses her pictures of her field trip to Meijer Gardens and her Maroon 5 .mp3s.

The other is a proprietary system controlling the functions of an orbiting inhabited space vessel, and if it crashes... well... you get the picture.

Silly.
