From the
STS-107 FAQ:
What's this about pictures from an Israeli spy satellite
showing Columbia exploding?
This refers to a series of 8 "high quality" images that began circulating the internet on 3/1/03, and almost immediately became a contender for the largest size chain mail letter in e-mail history. Supposedly, these images are of Columbia "exploding" during reentry, and are of sufficient quality so as to be able to see fragments and faces in the windows, etc, etc. The source of the images is an "Israeli Spy Satellite" that just happened to be pointing at Columbia during reentry and snapped the images.
Right. And pigs fly without having to be on a Pink Floyd album cover, too.
As everyone on the FAQ team realized immediately, all eight images are totally bogus for the following reasons:
First off, these are real images, but of a studio model. They are, in fact, just slightly fuzzed frame captures from the opening sequence of the Bruce Willis disaster flop, Armageddon. For proof, go waste a couple of bucks, rent the film, fast forward to 3:40 into the film, pause it, and compare to the images being passed around. The fact that so many people forgot this scene is also a testament to just how forgettable this particular Willis Die Hard variant truly is.
Most importantly, neither the US, the Russians, or even the Israelis have any cameras in orbit, spy or otherwise, that could make images that clean to begin with. Even ICONOS isn't that sharp or vivid in color.
Even if such a satellite existed, an Israeli spy satellite would never have been in a position to have imaged Columbia to begin - since the Middle East would have been the normal target for such a satellite, the Earth would have blocked the view had one been turned towards Columbia. In fact, any satellite would have had to have been north of Columbia, more than likely in an extreme inclination orbit at or near polar. Not bad for a global mapping satellite, but not for a spy satellite. Especially one intended for spying on Israel's numerous Middle Eastern adversaries.
Furthermore, the images don't even show a Shuttle undergoing reentry. Not only are the cargo bay doors open, there's no sign of any of the plasma contrail that's seen in the images taken of Columbia during its reentry. And more telling is the fact that not only is there no motion blur in the image, the position of the Shuttle relative to the Earth doesn't change with respect to any sort of forward motion.
To make matters even more embarrassing, the Shuttle being destroyed in the film isn't even Columbia, but the Shuttle Atlantis. If you blow up one of the images, you can see the name of the shuttle on the side of the model!
Bottom Line: Yet another hoax designed to reconfuddle the prebefuddled. Either that, or one perpetrated to boost rental sales on Armageddon.
Cheers!
