Space Shuttle Enterprise from 1979

My Dad found this pic that my Uncle took on August 12th, 1979 when the Enterprise was on a stop over at Tulsa International Airport. He was in the Air National Guard at the time and his unit was part of the security detail. Thought I would scan it in and share with everyone.

They are needed because of the shuttle on top I believe.

The Antonov was also modified with them.

It did the job it was designed for well. The problem is that its job changed after it came online. I don't think anyone ever intended for it to be our only avenue to space.

I saw it when it got here to KSC; It was very impressive. My friend's father worked for Johnson Controls, and was cool enough to remember me when getting passes for it.

It was also awesome to see an orbiter fly in that way, after it would have to land in Cali.

I saw it fly low and slow over BYU - Provo (Utah) when I was a freshman (1995-96). Definitely an odd sight seeing a 747 piggy-backing the SPACE SHUTTLE as it slowly flies by...Flew pretty low, right over campus and up the Valley to SLC airport...was pretty cool.
