CNN is showing pictures of what appears to be the remains of the Columbia falling from the sky over Texas. It doesn't look good. May our thoughts and prayers be with the family and friends of the astronauts who were onboard.

Just found out, I'm watching it. This is really bad. There probably wont be another flight for at least 1 year, maybe more. Considering that the space shuttle is the primary form of putting up parts for the ISS that project will get hurt also.

:Q:(

I couldn't believe what was going on - I was watching cartoons with my daughter and they broke with the news. I've been glued to the news ever since. /me prays for the families/friends of the astronauts.

It broke up on re-entry.

Hope is very small at this time...

My thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the Columbia crew!

They still haven't officially declared it lost, though it's just a formality at this juncture.

From what I've heard, they've mentioned that there was some insulation lost (presumably at lift off), and I think it was mentioned that it may have come from one of the "wings". I've also heard that they lost sensor contact with the hydrolic systems or something the like.

I feel for the families of those people. I also feel for the families of Challenger, which exploded on January 28, 1986. They just got through another anniversary and I think this will hit them hard and bring back memories of that disaster as well.

Now, would someone please shut those damn reporters up speculating that this is NOT a terrorist attack? If terrorists can bring down a shuttle at 200,000 feet going 12,000 MPH, we're in deep doo-doo.

Does anyone recall the shuttles having problems with their hydrolic systems in the past? For some reason, I think it has happened before though not to a scale where it caused a problem with the flight.

Just had a friend call me and I've got the TV on now. Shuttle missions have become so commonplace we take them for granted. I guess we forget the danger involved. Not anymore.

Thoughts go out to the friends and families of the courageous astronauts lost today. :(

Sheez, the freaking overdramatizing media just will not shut up about it not being a terrorist attack. Why must they try to make this tragedy worse than it already is? Slimeballs! :|

Whoa :Q :(

I'm not surprised it was Columbia, though. It was the oldest shuttle in the fleet, with the fewest safety systems. :(

It sounds like there was insulation from the main tank that came off during launch. It may have hit one of the wings and caused damage.

The flag has just been lowered to half-mast and the thought of the family and friends waiting at KSC is very upsetting. :(
