I actually think Sins is fine single...it's such a HUGE game it's nice to play it in spurts and then just pick up where you left off.

Try out Star Ruler. I wasted a lot of time on this one years back. I believe there's a Star Ruler 2 out as well I haven't played it. I'm afraid nothing comes closes to awesomeness that was the Homeworld games. I still have discs somewhere.

Not RTS, but if you like space you should check out Kerbal Space Program.

RTS:
Homeworld
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
/end

Notable mentions for Endless Space and Starpoint Gemini 2 (not the first one)

If you're looking towards the future and more general space-y type stuff...
Starhammer (Space TBS)
Shallow Space
Rebel Galaxy
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada (likely TBS)

Sins of a solar empire.

I thought Nexus: The Jupiter Incident was a pretty atrocious game. Each to their own I guess.

Sins was good for a while

Come to think of it i haven't seen many space based RTS in the past several years. I remember a few star trek ones back in the day - Armada maybe?

They're all the rage lately.

There have been a few on Kickstarter and some looking around on Steam Early Access.

Plus earlier this year (or late last, I've lost track of time) we had Ancient Space.

A much deeper and more tactical game focused around small numbers of large ships with some customisation ability.

My main issues with it were a horrifically terribad storyline and the near requirement of 100% foresight to predict exactly what equipment you need on the exact ship for each mission... felt quite apparent at times, especially when going back and reading over mission FAQ's.

Ancient Space huh...hmmm!

Another vote for Sins, nothing beats seeing a swarm of thousands of fighters dog fighting next to giant capitol ships and massive dreadnoughts while the nearby planet is getting nuked from orbit...
