Space Games

Freelancer was good fun for a while. Oh, and Escape Velocity Nova is really cool for a retro 2D style game.

Another vote for Freelancer, I lost a lot of hours in that game. Some people would also say EVE online is also really good.

Starlancer, Tachyon: the Fringe(Bruce Campell does the voice work in this one)-both sims, Starfleet Command series(strategy), Bridge Commander(sim), Mechwarrior 4(sim/action) and Mechcommander 2(rts), Startopia(kinda like dungeon keeper with a sci fi setting) Conquest: Frontier Wars(cookie cutter space ship rts, but the ship designs are pretty cool), Independence War 2(hardcore space sim, but excellent). All of these are at least 2 years old, but most can be picked up in the $10 section of Best Buy or WalMart.

Freespace 2 = Best space simulation to date. In fact (though I haven't played it in a little while), I think it would probably still have acceptable graphics. They were mind blowing when it came out.

Galactic Civilizations, Space Empires IV and an oldy but goody Master of Orion 2, stay awas from MOO 3 though.

Freespace and Freespace 2, X-Wing Alliance. And if you want some nostalgia Wing Commander 1-3, X-Wing and Tie Fighter.
Dont bother with Tachyon, It blew. Horribly.

Independence War II

this one was a gem... I have yet to find a game that has a physics engine as convincingly realistic as this one. I just wish the game had more content for my open-ended play style.

Does anyone know a good place to purchase Freespace 2? It seems to be mighty hard to find.....

I've never even seen it ever. I own freespace 1 and the expansion, loved it, wanted freespace 2, never seen it. Everyone tells me it's better than the first, and the first is like the best space sim I've ever played.

Alpha Centauri
Galactic Civilizations
Master of Orion 2
Star Trek Starfleet Command III
Tie Fighter
X-Wing

Ever try allegiance? multiplayer team game developed by MS. Did well for a while by MS. They stopped supporting it and the pay severs were shutdown. Now it's maintained by enthusiasts and is still one of the best un-appreciated space games around. Some people have problems with the team investor/commader who can boot anyone that doesn't listen, but it's not used often.
Just go to:
http://www.freeallegiance.org/login.shtml

and click on PLAY on the top bar. That will get you started. While it is free, due to cheats and whatnot, you do have to register and login is required to play. It's well worth it, if you've never tried, or even if it's been a while. Like most games five years old, it's not up to todays standard. That being said, it was amazing at the time and still looks pretty darn good.

If you ever see it in some backwater game store be sure and buy it, it goes for around $100 on Ebay. You may be able to find it on some of the abandonware sites, it was on Underdogs but it looks like its gone now.

edit: NM its still there, just under the action catagory. All of the 'extra' stuff has been ripped, and the music, cut scenes, and voice where a huge part of the game 🙁
