I am with you on this.

Yuo--agreed! It;s one of the reasons I enjoy Mass Effect, because it's the closest thing in ages to something like this.

Which is sad, because Mass Effect is very, very far from a space flight sim.

You could just run through the installer, which will set it all up for you automatically. Although if you already have the game, it's probably more efficient to get only the 3.6.9 build (the most recent non-beta version) and the media VP packages. Make a thread in the forums there if you're having problems; someone can direct you on how to make everything work with the game.

we need the Wing Commander series back, Homeworld, FreeSpace, Nexxus - The Jupiter Incident, Independence War Series...

I need my Space Strategy / Space Sim fix. Just bought Galactic Civilizations II but i'm not into turn based strategy games.

I'd be happy with the star wars series re-released with new textures and winxp compatibility.

Jump To Lightspeed without having to subscribe to SWG... that'd work for me. :)

That appears to have all the useful links. In general, the HLP forums are the place to go for any news on FS2. The SCP website is basically defunct and is not used anymore.

it saddens me to think about all the 13 y/o kids who play Crysis "cause its |<00l_" and will never experience the joy of blowing up a fleet of Sathanas ships or the Knosos gate.

good times...good times...

Or even just the massive dogfights being extremely outnumbered yet somehow managing to win by the skin of your teeth.

Hearing the responses from this thread, I went and tried out FreeSpace 2. The game is unexpectedly fun; I wish this genre had a sudden new breathe of life. I can't wait to play more, but I also just started System Shock 2, another oldie that I missed.

I just witnessed the first appearance of the GTVA Colossus. The different types of ships, objectives, and weaponry keeps this game extremely fresh no matter how much I seem to play it.

Dont forget the superb voice acting and very well done FMV cut scenes. Those really help tell the story in a way that most games dont.

The best is still to come. :) Be sure to accept the SOC assignments you get at that point, as those are considered to be some of the game's most fun missions.

There are also plenty of top notch user-made campaigns to play after you complete the game. Check the various threads marked "release" in here.

EPIC WIN. FS2 has the best damned campaign. I still get goosebumps hearing the superb voice acting on the command briefings, and watching the FMVs. It's just so easy to get swept into the whole story. That game is just shockingly good.

TiE Fighter was freaking AMAZING as well. That game on my old 486 was so much fun that I lost several years of my young life to it.

Wow, no one has mentioned Tachyon: The Fringe? That must have been the game that got me into space/mech sims in the first place.

Btw, I still have Aquanox (the first one). Interesting how such a lame game (gameplay-wise) spawned such a well-known graphics benchmark...

the benchmark was made with the 2nd game's engine.
the second game was quite fun! it had many "colorful" characters and gave you the option to outfit your ship and buy upgrades.

still, both games pale in comparison to Sub Culture. its an underwater trader/action/sim and one of the first games i played with my mighty Creative VooDoo2 (back in 99 i think it was).

FS2 owned. It was epic. It may not have had the most realistic mechanics but its atmosphere, campaign and gameplay were top notch. You could actually feel as if you were taking part in a large battle in vast space. It's too bad that the genre has pretty much died.

IMHO, none of the space flight games that have been released in the past 10 or so years have come close to capturing the same joy and gameplay experience as Privateer or Wing Commander III. :frown:

Wing Comander was the best! It would be great if they would contiue this series. Updated graphics would make it look great.

I still have the original codewheel and map for that game. :D I wouldn't consider it space flight sim as much as early 4x, but great game none the less. If you haven't already played it, check out The Urquan Masters, it's an open source remake of Star Control 2. I think a couple of those guys worked on Starflight, and it shows.

What no mention of Asteroids?nothing like blowing up rocks!! :D

Seriously, x-wing,decent and freespace both 1+2 were all good.

I can remember another Star Wars based arcade game where you would go in and attack the deathstar while avoiding the towers that fired at you. Nothing like that green lined display. Damn if I can remember the name of that one.(I really date myself with that one)
