SP2 ruins network shares

After installing service pack 2 I have 2 new problems:

- having to click a dialog box to run a .exe (nearly all software for me runs off a network samba share)

- doesn't remember my password any more

How can I fix this? I may start by comparing the registry of SP1 verses SP2 but this is pretty desperate.

For the first one, you need to go into IE (yes, Internet Explorer) and then click on tools, internet options, security tab, local intranet, sites button, advanced button. Then add your local intranet name (*.domain.com, for example).

usually, when you map a drive in winxp pro, you have the option of signing onto that shared resource with a different username and password than the one you are logged into for the OS. this allows the administrator to use ONE username and password on all the PC's in the local network.

what he is saying is, he doesn't know where to go to enter that info.


In response to the OP.

the easiest way to do it is, make sure that the workgroup name is the same as before. go to Windows Explorer, Disconnect mapped drive.

than go to Tools, map network drive and remap it. when mapping it make sure to note the option to put in a different username / password.

By this I mean I have to give my username and password on every reboot to access the network drive.

I found a way round it for the moment. I changed the password to blank and added my Windows username to the samba server on the linux end using "smbpasswd -a user" (leaving password blank).
