SP2 freezes after install reboot

I have DL the new SP2 from MS site twice. Each time, the splash screen freezes upon the installation reboot. I am using an ASUS P4S800D-E deluxe MB with 1004 BIOS. P4 2.8 northwood is NOT overclocked. One of the programs that loads at reboot is Spysweeper. Roboform is also loaded at reboot. System Restore gets me back to square one. Should I wait for the Windows Update to install this SP2 automatically, or will I have the same probs? Am I stuck with SP1 until Longhorn appears?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

It sounds like an incompatibility issue with Spysweeper and Roboform. A couple of things to try is checking for latest updates of those programs or uninstalling those programs and then try installing SP2.

If you really want those programs then your best bet would be to hold off on the SP2 upgrade until Spysweeper & Roboform have an SP2 compatible patch available.

I just remembered that my son installed a Beta version of ATI Catalyst so that he could optimize the 9600 Radeon to play Doom 3. Maybe that is the problem. I can re-install the non Beta version and get rid of the other two programs. I'll let you know if it works.

This may not help much but I too installed the beta catalyst driver for Doom3 before installing sp2. Everything seems to work fine for me however that catalyst driver doesn't seem to support hibernation because the video goes crazy and the system seems to be frozen when I bring the machine out of hibernation. That was happening before sp2 though.

When I installed SP2 yesterday, everything went fine till it rebooted. It showed me the normal logon screen, so I logged on to my account and it just..froze. All I could see was the wallpaper. Exporer etc was all running. SO i rebooted again and logged on again, same problem. So i went to task manager and noticed some setup.exe kinda prog, I exited it and rebooted again and logged on to my brother's account, and voila, it worked. Then i logged off and logged on to my account, and it worked too. I duno why it happened, but it did. You probably don't have the same problem but I thought I might share my experience anyway.

I removed the beta video driver and stopped spysweeper and roboform from loading. But I still have the same problem with creen freezing on reboot. I can get into safe mode however. Any ideas?

Or do the smart thing and wait a few months till all the bugs are ironed out and software companies can write patches.

If I remember correctly back when SP1 first came out, wasn't it suggested to disable all programs running in the task bar including your virus scanner before you proceeded with the install?

do you get to blue screen flicker before the computer reboots?? if so do the following

right click on my computer
go to properties
click on the advanced tab
click on the settings button for startup and recovery
uncheck the "automatically restart" checkbox

bootup again, if you get the blue screen look for any program names on the bottom w/ the error code or whatever. this is what helped me determine that Roxio GoBack is not compatable with SP2.
